GDP at Purchasing Power Parity (PPP)
GDP (purchasing power parity) compares the gross domestic product (GDP) or value of all final goods and services produced within a nation in a given year. A nation's GDP at purchasing power parity (PPP) exchange rates is the sum value of all goods and services produced in the country valued at prices prevailing in the United States.
CIA estimated China's GDP at $11.18 trillion in 2015. According to CIA, " because China's exchange rate is determined by fiat rather than by market forces, the official exchange rate measure of GDP is not an accurate measure of China's output; GDP at the official exchange rate substantially understates the actual level of China's output vis-a-vis the rest of the world; in China's situation, GDP at purchasing power parity provides the best measure for comparing output across countries."
It may be recalled that by the end of the Cold War, using a similar methodology, the CIA estimated that East Germany had a higher GDP per capita than West Germany. Somehow the comparison between the Trabant and Mercedes-Benz did not enter into this accounting. "Who are you going to believe? Me or your own lieing eyes?"
