Aker Arctic Technology has developed a new hull concept optimized for both open water and ice going service The hull form provides excellent open water performance at the design draft and good ice-going performance at the other," ice draft". In open water conditions the carrier will be operated at loaded water line. In ice conditions the bow can be trimmed down to get a bow shape formed like in ice-going vessels.

Existing LNG carrier designs are not capable of more than 0.3 m thick ice. Atomflot announced 01 March 2018 a purchase from a single service provider for the right to conclude a contract for the development of a conceptual design for a linear icebreaker, a preliminary concept for an Arc5 ice-strengthening tanker project, model tests of the Aker ARC 123 icebreaker for the needs of the FSUE Atomflot. Aker Arctic Technology Inc., is a Finnish company.

The draft agreement states that "the results of the work will be reports on ice model tests for various purposes, a preliminary conceptual design of a 46-meter-long linear icebreaker, a preliminary draft design for an Arc 5 type gas carrier and a comparative report of the 40 megawatt propulsion complex of an icebreaker."

The hull of the LNG carrier is optimized to low manage with engine power at service speed. At the open water draft the bow shape works like any other good open water design. At ice breaking draft the bow shape works like an icebreaker. Aker Arctic Technology has developed a new hull concept optimized for both open water and ice going service.
