M/V Sparta

Due to its design, Sparta can transport any type of cargo for various purposes. It has 2 holds and a cargo deck for placing containers and rolling equipment. The presence of powerful ship cranes with a lifting capacity of 240 tons each and a stern cargo ramp allows for vertical and horizontal cargo handling. The length of the vessel is 127 m, the width is 20 m. With a maximum load of 6,785 tons per voyage, Sparta is capable of transporting more than 400 containers at a speed of up to 12 knots.

In September 2022, Sparta was redeployed from the port of Novorossiysk to ensure supplies to the Kaliningrad region in the context of the sanctions blockade. During this time, it transported about 200 thousand tons of cargo to Kaliningrad and back, including 1.5 thousand units of equipment, about 11.5 thousand containers and 8 thousand tons of general cargo.

The general cargo ship Sparta of Oboronlogistics, which was used on the container line St. Petersburg – Kaliningrad, was taken out of service on 26 March 2024 and placed in the dock of JSC Kanonersky Ship Repair Plant in the port of St. Petersburg for scheduled repairs. This was reported by the press service of Oboronlogistics.

During the repair, under the supervision of experts from the North-West branch of the Federal Autonomous Institution “Russian Classification Society”, the following work would be performed on the vessel:

  • maintenance and repair of the power plant, main engine and auxiliary mechanisms;
  • diagnostics and repair of the shaft line and the propeller-rudder complex;
  • maintenance and repair of cargo cranes;
  • repair and painting of the ship's hull.

In addition, the Sparta ship's communications would be upgraded and a new system will be installed that works with the Russian satellite constellation. “Once all work is completed, the vessel will return to service,” the press release said.

“The departure of Sparta for repairs will not lead to a significant decrease in the volume of cargo transportation on the Saint Petersburg – Kaliningrad line, since two other Oboronlogistics dry cargo ships, Sparta II and Pizhma, continue to operate as usual,” the company explained.
