Ilyushin Il-96 Camber - Design

It was planned to fit the first variant of IL-96 aircraft with 18 ton thrust engines designed by N. Kuznetsov and a high bypass ratio. The intention was to keep the 56-meters long IL-86 fuselage providing space for 350 passengers that would have assured the flight range of 10 000 km. After Ivan Silaevs nomination for the post of the Minister of Aviation Industry, it was decided to use unified PS-90 engine with 16 ton thrust capacity designed by Pavel Soloviev. The plane turned out to be too large for such an engine. The designers managed to find the way out having reduced the fuselage length by 5,5 m; the number of passengers in single-class configuration diminished to 300 persons. The aircraft received the name of IL-96-300.

The new aircraft looks like its predecessor IL-86, although it received quality changes to its parameters, airframe design, systems and equipment. A large volume of research and experience work enabled to design new high aspect ratio wing with supercritical profiles, optimal configuration of engine nacelles. A great work was performed for improvement of aerodynamic. High emphasis was placed on reducing weight of airframe construction, functional systems and equipment. Flight modes optimization issues were profoundly analyzed.

All these solutions permitted to increase weight and fuel efficiency of the new aircraft, to boost its operating life. IL-96-300 is able to transport passengers, cargoes and mail on long-distance lines from 4000 to 11000 km. In single-class configuration, it takes aboard up to 300 persons. At the same time, the new aircraft fuel consumption is two times lower compared to its predecessor long-distance IL-62M.

Designers also took care of the crew. For the first time they have designed the so-called glass cockpit, having replaced several devices with multi-functional displays. All the information about the functioning of the liners onboard systems is visualized on six colour displays that considerably simplifies aircraft control for the crew.

The onboard flight and navigation complex ensures full automation of aircraft piloting in difficult weather conditions above any regions of the globe and automatic landing. It permits to make flights without navigator that has reduced the number of crew members to three persons.

Much attention was paid to the safety of flight-control systems. Its fly-by-wire control system is duplicated by the mechanical system, where all the efforts of the wheel and the pedals are transferred to the handlebars through cable runs, so that the pilot should be able to land the plane manually in case of failure of electronics. Pilots who flew these aircraft note their reliability and simplicity.

Security issues were given special priority in the process of engineering. The integral control and troubleshooting system permits to bring out defects during maintenance service. Thanks to its extraordinary reliability and the use of multi-channel redundant systems with automatic shutdown, switching defective channels and mechanic doubling, not a single accident causing losses of life hasnt occurred during IL-96-300 exploitation period.

The IL-96-300 provides the passengers with the up-to-date level of comfort; it meets the international ecological requirements, and can operate in any region all over the world. Due to the airplane systems high reliability and "on condition" maintenance mode, the airplane operational cost was decreased. The airplane crew cabin, its equipment and finishing were made based on the ergonomics requirements that currently ensure the necessary comfort for pilots. All information concerning the onboard systems operation, piloting and navigation systems operation is depicted on six color displays. The airplane control is computer-aided, and it is supported by the electrical-hydraulic system with a back up artificial mechanical channel.

The Il-96-300 airplane passenger salons with their soft diffused illumination, the modern finishing, comfortable passenger seats, video and audio entertainment system and various auxiliary devices and equipment provide the airplane passengers with a maximum level of comfort.

The passengers are placed in two spacious cabins with 3+3+3 seat rows arrangement scheme. There are two passages between blocks of seats. Mixed variants with superior comfort are also provided in first and business class cabins. Two cargo compartments at the lower deck are fit for fast baggage loading and unloading in standard international containers. Wide-body cabin configuration enabled to reach additional comfort for passengers. Soft lighting, modern trimming, buffet counters, comfortable armchairs with various equipment, frequently located windows with glare shields all this is dedicated to maximize comfort in the cabin.
