Gangut [1911] - Soviet Period

The New Economic Policy opted for industrialization, and the amended plan added many ships. This included the restored and modernized battleships Marat (former Petropavlovsk), "October revolution" (formerly "Gangut"), and "Paris commune" (former Sevastopol). On the Black Sea, he again became the Sevastopol.

From October 1918 to 4.05.1925 Gangut was in Petrograd naval port on the long-term storage. On 21/04/1921 the ship became a part of the BF. The ship was renovated from 18/04/1925 till 20/07/1926, and upgrading from 12.10.1931 till 4.08.1934. During modernization the bridge was enlarged, the forward stack trunked back at a sharp angle, a heavy foremast fitted, and heavy cranse added to the aft superstructure. On 24/07/1954, the ship was reclassified as a training vessel. On 17/02/1956 the ship was stricken ["expelled"] from the lists of ships of the Navy and commissioned in OFI for dismantling and sale. The ship was transfered on 26/03/1956 city and broken up ["disbanded"] in 1956-1957 on the basis of the Glavvtorchermeta in Leningrad.

Petropavlovsk (later Marat) was renovated and upgraded in 1928-1931. On 23.09.1941, at the military harbor of Kronstadt, the ship suffered a direct hit from 250-pound bomb which destroyed the nose of the LC on the 52nd rib. The ship sat on the harbor floor at a depth 11 m, and was later raised and subsequently used as a stationary receiving ship. On 25.09.1951 the ship was reclassified to non-self-training ship. On 4.09.1953 the ship was expelled from the lists of ships of the Navy and commissioned in OFI for dismantling and sale.

Sebastopol was originally stationed in the Baltic, and transfered to the Black Sea in 1930.

Poltava was laid up in 1918, and caught fire in 1919. Renamed Mikhail Frunze, shortened to Frunze, the ship caught fire again in 1922, and was beached, though a total loss. The hull was refloated, and used as an experimental hulk. In the 1933, plans were drawn up to convert the hulk into a modern battlecruiser. Two variants were proposed, Version A having all the boiler uptakes trunked into one funnel. Frunze was later converted into a barracks ship, and eventually scuttled as a blockship in 1941. The hulk was raised in 1944, but not broken up until 1956.

The transition from Kronstadt to Sevastopol (December 1929-January 1930) was a test of the quality of this project. It became clear that design needed a bow, as the lack of the forecastle did not meet the requirements of seaworthiness and made the ship completely unfit for steaming in the ocean in storm conditions. Experience also revealed small range, the nuisance of operations of boilers with coal heating with the rocking motion and loading of fuel into the sea, and poor habitability. Before setting sail, to improve seaworthiness, the bow was placed high without top decking bulwark. In practice, it turned out to be a huge scoop that with pitching "recruited" dozens of tons of water, which deformed the upper deck of the bow. After a storm had to go to France and get new decking.

It happened that the "Paris Commune" underwent modernization in two phases, in 1934-38. and in 1934-40. The power plant was modernised, extended range of guns, and new elements were established to increase the stability. Only "Paris commune" in 1941 managed to realize the original vision of "a large modernization." However, this greatly increased displacement and decreased speed.

There was no luck with two other Baltic battleships. When an air raid bomb hit the "Marat" between front add-in and the second turret, "so that the" good ship was split in two. Front end sank immediately. The remainder was restored and it was used as a floating battery. In 1941, a bomb hit the bow of the battleship "October Revolution". It stayed afloat, but stood in repair atthe Admiralty shipyard until 1944.

Frunze - Aircraft Carrier

In the Baltic Sea the fourth battleship - Poltava, later renamed the "Mikhail Frunze", in the winter of 1919-1920 was standing at the Admiralty shipyard in Saint Petersburg. The heat was on from its own boiler. The train drivers on it inadvertently caused a fire that lasted several hours. Examining the ship, the Commission found him unfit for further use, and the undamaged equipment was used to repair the remaining ships. But then in two years there was an attempt to recover the ship.

Given the condition of the vessel (the lack of artillery on it) the day-to-day management of the staff of the RKKF proposed following the example of other countries, was "Mikhail Frunze" to be converted into an aircraft carrier. A plan was developed showing that the remodeled "Mikhail Frunze" would provide basing for 50 planes. However, despite the fact that the State of the economy and industry of the country prevented the realization of this progressive idea, its not allowed to scrap is the modernization of was postponed to a later time, using it to "spare parts" for other battleships, which gradually injected into the system.

Mikhail Frunze - 1932 restructuring

In 1932 a draft was developed for restructuring the "Frunze" battlecruiser. The essence of the project was to renounce one of 305-mm turrets and install a second turret linearly lower in the nose. Due to the weight released, it was planned to install additional boilers and guns, which would give a total capacity of 88,000 hp and speed 25 knots with a slight increase the tonnage up to 26,000 tons. The 120-mm guns were replaced the 130-mm, and their location was changed. The 100-mm anti-aircraft and 37-mm guns were introduced. Three seaplanes were installed on the hangar deck.
