BMP-3 - Variants

Feedback from the United Arab Emirates use of the AIFV has pushed the Russians to develop a new version of the BMP 3 called Dragun. This variant has a motor at the front and a ramp for the rapid deployment of the soldiers in the rear.

On 14 October 2015, according Albert Bakov, first vice president and co-owner of the Tractor Plants Concern, the Russian Defense Ministry may allocate extra funding for developing the new version of the BMP-3 Dragoon infantry fighting vehicle. "The Defense Ministry is interested in those vehicles," Bakov added. "Once we’re through with the trials, we’ll hold talks with them."

He stressed that the Dragoon has no imported components. The newly developed version also differs from the baseline BMP-3 in that its powerplant is located in front and the landing compartment is fitted with a ramp. The Dragoon must receive a "Terminator" combat module armed with 2A70 100mm caliber gun, 2A72 automatic 30mm gun and PKT 7.62mm caliber machinegun.

Bakov said the model demonstrated early in September at the Russia Arms Expo-2015 Defense Exhibition in Nizhny Tagil is not the Dragoon’s final version. What is now mounted on the turret, will be put away, as much as possible, in the body since all "the protruding parts" will become an easy target for enemy’s munitions," he said. "I think the process will take at least a year," Bakov added.

He also said that NATO specialists "very carefully examined" the BMP-3’s new versions, Dragoon and Derivation, armed with the 57mm gun in Nizhny Tagil. "They did so, however, not because they wanted to buy them, as you well understand," Bakov added.

  • The BMP-3F is a Marine Corps Fighting Vehicle, created on the basis of the BMP-3 and is intended for combat operations by Marine Corps units, border and coastal troops in the coastal zone, on the coast and during the amphibious assault. BMP-3F retains all the unique features of the BMP-3 IFV while incorporating advanced design solutions for the Marines and other Sea borne units successfully accomplishing amphibious assault missions. The BMP-3F IFV is equipped with a 100mm cannon-missile launcher, 30mm automatic cannon and 7.62mm machine gun integrated in a weapon station, as well as two 7.62mm hull machine guns, and the options for the sighting systems are the same as for the BMP-3 IFV. The main difference is the augmented amphibious capability due to clever design solutions such as oblongated snorkel, lightweight screens and visors, which allow Sea borne units to stay at Sea for a long time (up to Sea State 3 and deliver accurate fire at Sea State 2), and successfully conduct assault operations on the enemy’s shores. BMP-3F fulfills combat and transport tasks both on the ground and in the water. The IFV can disembark from a landing vessel off shore directly into the water and embark it again after successfully accomplishing amphibious assault missions.
  • BMP-3M is an improved modification of the BMP-3. It surpasses the base version in mobility and firepower thanks to the installation of a new turbocharged UTD-32T engine with a capacity of 660 hp. from. and an improved fire control system that allows you to recognize targets and conduct aimed fire at long ranges and speeds. It is distinguished by increased security due to the installation of additional armor screens and the Arena-E active protection complex , which protects the vehicle from guided and unguided anti-tank missiles and enemy grenades. LMS allows you to automatically recognize, track and attack targets in motion. The target recognition range of the tank type is 4500 m. Installed side screens protect against damage by armor-piercing bullets of 12.7 mm caliber , and also reduce the impact of the cumulative jet. The landing of the soldiers is carried out through the aft hatch, which is somewhat complicated by the need to crawl the landing through the engine.
  • The BMP-3 with the " Shtora-1 " optical-electronic countermeasures complex provides effective protection of the vehicle from being hit by ATGMs with semi-automatic and automatic guidance systems. The high efficiency of the complex was confirmed during the IDEX-2003 exhibition at the Makatra test site. When firing at the vehicle with various ATGMs from a range of 3000 m, none of the missiles reached the target.
  • BMP-3 with reactive armor "Cactus" was demonstrated at the exhibition in Omsk in 2001. Blocks of reactive armor, insensitive to a bullet of 12.7 mm, located on the side and frontal parts of the hull and turret, together with rubber-fabric and lattice screens. Additional protection significantly increases the survivability of infantry fighting vehicles in the context of the use of light anti-tank weapons with cumulative warheads. The armament complex, fire control system, internal layout, engine compartment are similar to the base model. Due to the increase in mass, the BMP of this modification cannot float. When the additional protection is removed, this ability returns, as the jet engines are preserved. The machine has larger dimensions in width (up to 3.97 m ) and body length (up to 7.16 m ).
