The 49th combined arms army was formed on August 7, 1941 on the basis of the directive of the Supreme High Command Headquarters of August 6, 1941. By August 17, 1941, the combined forces and military units of the army were concentrated in the area of Dogorobuzh.

On October 13, 1941, the 49th Army became part of the Western Front and regrouped in the Kaluga region on the Mozhaisk defense line. The army began to conduct combat operations during the Mozhaisk-Maloyaroslavets defensive operation (October 10-30), and then participated in a counterattack near Moscow, liberated Serpukhov, Yukhnov, Smolensk, Yelnya.

On April 24, 1944, the 49th Army was transferred to the 2nd Belorussian Front, conducted military operations during the Belorussian strategic offensive operation, forced the river. The Dnieper liberated the Belarusian cities of Mstislavl, Mogilev, Minsk, Grodno and the Polish cities of Lomza, Chersk, Danzig.

In 1945, the 49th Army took part in the Berlin strategic offensive operation, and on the river. Elbe met with the Allied forces - the 2nd English Army. In August 1945, the 49th combined-arms army was disbanded, and the army’s field directorate turned to the formation of the Gorky Military District.

In 2010, pursuant to the Decree of the President of the Russian Federation of July 6, 2010, the directives of the Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation of July 18, 2010 and the General Staff of the Armed Forces of July 19, 2010, the 49th combined-arms army was again formed with headquarters in Stavropol.

The army included formations and military units deployed on the territory of 4 constituent entities of the Russian Federation and beyond its borders in the Stavropol and Krasnodar Territories, Adygea, Karachay-Cherkessia and the Republic of Abkhazia.

In the 49th combined arms army of the Southern Military District (Southeast Military District), deployed in the Krasnodar and Stavropol Territories, in 2012 military personnel transfered more than 6 thousand weapons and military equipment (IWT) to summer operation. T-72B3 tanks, BTR-82A armored personnel carriers, Msta-S multi-purpose tractors, Msta-S self-propelled howitzers, Tornado-G multiple launch rocket systems (MLRS) were prepared for the new training period, whichl began on June 1, in formations and military units.

During the work, up to 50 technical operations were performed on each unit of armament and military equipment, while it was planned to use more than 300 tons of motor and transmission oils and about 40 tons of grease. Before the new training period, a review of the IWT compounds will be held, which will show the results of the work performed. Specialists of repair units, crews and drivers of military vehicles are involved in servicing military equipment - more than 3 thousand military personnel in total.

In 2017, the 49th combined arms army of the Southern Military District (Southeast Military District), the intensity of combat training classes with the implementation of training and control exercises, driving combat vehicles in the winter training period increased by 20% compared to the same period of the previous year. Over 20 tactical exercises were conducted at the Molkino, Nikolo-Aleksandrovsky, Sernovodsky training grounds, including involving Mi-8AMTSh and Ka-52 Aligator helicopters, about 2 thousand fire training exercises with small arms firing, and more than 500 lessons using weapons of military vehicles. During combat training exercises at the training grounds in the Krasnodar Territory and Astrakhan Region, anti-aircraft missile units successfully performed off-target combat firing from Buk anti-aircraft missile systems and Igla portable anti-aircraft missile systems against various air targets.

n 2017, the 49th Army received new Peony self-propelled artillery mounts, Tulip self-propelled mortars, and also took up combat duty anti-aircraft missile systems in the Krasnodar Territory.

In total, over 200 tactical exercises of various sizes, over 70 trainings for managing missile attacks and artillery fire, were conducted with missile and artillery units and army units in 2018. Half of the firing took place in the dark. Compared to the previous year, the intensity of combat training increased by 20%. Gunners practiced the tasks of selecting, equipment and camouflaging firing positions, reconnaissance targets and fire destruction of conditional enemy targets. Particular attention was paid to the practical interaction of artillery units with motorized rifle and intelligence units. During combat training, the Iskander operational-tactical missile systems, the 152-mm self-propelled howitzers Msta-S and Akatsiya, the 122-mm self-propelled howitzers Gvozdika, the Grad-M.

In December 2018, in order to implement the draft Decree of the President of the Russian Federation “On the Combat Banner of a military unit”, the 49th army, which distinguished itself in the performance of combat missions, was awarded a new standard Combat Banner.
