The battalion of the guard of honor of the 154th separate commandant's Preobrazhensky regiment is located in the Lefortovo barracks on Krasnokazarmennaya street in Moscow. This building was built in the late 1830s for a training regiment of carabinieri (mounted or foot military riflemen). It has the shape of a square, each side of which is 120 meters. The architectural style is Empire. Later, the Lefortovo barracks housed the machine-gun school of the Moscow proletarian rifle division, from which many military leaders of the Second World War became graduates, as well as the Higher courses for the command staff of the Red Army "Shot". The commandant regiment of the Moscow military district (the former name of the Preobrazhensky regiment) occupied the building in 1956.
The event of the Transfiguration is recorded in three of the four Gospels:Matthew 17:1-9, Mark 9:2-8, and Luke 9:28-36. Jesus took the Apostles Peter, James, and John with Him up upon a mountain, and while they were on the mountain Jesus was transfigured. His face shone like the sun, and His garments became glistening white. Moses and Elijah appeared with Christ, talking to Him.
There may be said to be three summits in the life of Jesus — the Temptation, the Transfiguration, and the Agony in the Garden. Of these the Transfiguration was the summit level and division. It was the one open manifestation of Godhead. Before, Jesus had been manifested as God only in words and acts; here He takes on the appearance proper to Divinity. The attempts to explain the mystery of the Transfiguration have been innumerable. And many of these, no doubt, have been valuable contributions towards its solution. What was the meaning of the Transfiguration for the disciples? Obviously this was a scene intended to impress their minds. The three Synoptists detail the fact that Jesus took Peter, James and John apart to be witnesses of the extraordinary event. There was a purpose in His action. Had the Transfiguration been only an intensified condition of spiritual exaltation for our Lord, or an experience given to encourage and strengthen Him for the awful ordeal through which He had to pass, it would be by no means needful that the disciples should be spectators. The change in His appearance overawed them. The three Evangelists emphasize their terror. That was what they recalled most vividly. There was the glory of His self-devotion, of His utter surrender of Himself for the needy world, and there was also the glory of His resolved will, which made Him set His face as a flint to go to Jerusalem in spite of all that was to meet Him. This death is not a yielding to the malice of men, but the fulfilment of the eternal purpose of God.
It is believed that Christ's transfiguration took place at the time of the Jewish Festival of Booths, and that the celebration of the event in the Christian Church became the New Testament fulfillment of the Old Testament feast. Presently it is celebrated on the sixth of August, forty days before the feast, Elevation of the Holy Cross. Just as Peter, James, and John saw the transfiguration before the crucifixion so that they might know who it is who will suffered for them, the Church connects these two feasts to help the faithful understand the mission of Christ and that his suffering was voluntary.
The Transfiguration of Christ is one of the Great Feasts of the Orthodox Church, celebrated on August 6 and August 19 (according to Old Calendarists), using the Gregorian Calendar, Julian Calendar, and Revised Julian Calendar. Like all feasts of the Master, the Transfiguration is a vigil-ranked feast, though in parish practice a full All-Night Vigil is usually not celebrated. Typically, Great Vespers is conducted on the eve of the feast, and on the morning of the feast, the Divine Liturgy of Saint John Chrysostom celebrated, traditionally preceded by the Matins service.
The Preobrazhensky and Semyonovsky regiments are one of the most famous formations of the Russian army until the 20th century. They were created in 1691 on the basis of the "amusing troops" with whom the young Peter I studied military affairs. It was these two regiments that became the base for the creation of a new regular army, organized according to European standards. The Preobrazhensky regiment is one of the most famous formations of the Russian army. Later, the Preobrazhensky regiment became the basis of the Life Guards of the Russian Empire, into which Peter personally selected soldiers and officers.
The first regiment of the Russian guard was created in 1683 by the will of young Peter the Great from among the peers of the "boyar children" in the court village of Preobrazhensky near Moscow for "Funny military fun". Since 1687, the Preobrazhensky "amusing regiment", as well as the second regiment of "amusing" ones, which arose in the neighboring village of Semenovskoye, began to be called soldiers. With the outbreak of the Northern War in August 1700, the regiment for the first time officially received the name of the Preobrazhensky Life Guards. The autocrat himself passed all the steps of the career ladder in this regiment, reaching the rank of colonel in 1706. Since that time, all Russian sovereigns and sovereigns who occupied the tsarist throne received this title and were the chiefs of the regiment. During the years of Peter's rule, the Life Guards Preobrazhensky regiment turned into a true support for the throne and a forge of personnel for the nascent Empire. The regiment, formed mainly from the nobility, took part in all the decisive battles and campaigns of the 1st quarter of the 18th century. - from "Narva Confusion" (1700) to the campaign in Persia (1722).
The Russian guard received the baptism of fire in the Northern War of 1700-1721. In the battle of Narva in November 1700, two guards regiments - Preobrazhensky and Semenovsky - held back the attacks of the Swedes for three hours. Their perseverance saved the Russian army from complete defeat. For this feat, the Transfiguration and Semenovites were awarded a badge of distinction with the inscription: "November 19, 1700". The guards also took part in other battles with the Swedes: they took Noteburg (1702), won a victory at Narva (1704), distinguished themselves in the battles of Lesnaya and Poltava (1709), etc.For many years, the guards did not have any advantages in rank over the rest of the troops. However, after the approval at the beginning of 1722 of the table of ranks, officers of the guards regiments received the seniority of two ranks against the army.
The Preobrazhensky Life Guards Regiment was disbanded in 1918 after the fall of the monarchy. The modern history of the Transfiguration began with the emergence of the 154th separate commandant regiment, which was formed at the end of 1979. The regiment was subordinated to the military commandant of the city of Moscow and was stationed in the Lefortovo barracks. Its basis was the 99th separate commandant battalion and the 1st separate company of the guard of honor.
The regiment received the honorary name "Preobrazhensky" in the spring of 2013, when the corresponding decree was signed by the President of the Russian Federation. Russian leader Vladimir Putin spoke 12 December 2012 about the need to revive the Preobrazhensky and Semyonovsky regiments, since "the fighting spirit of the Armed Forces rests on traditions, on a living connection with history, on examples of heroes' courage and self-sacrifice." According to the President of the Russian Federation, it is absolutely necessary to return from oblivion the glorified and legendary military units and formations, which for some reason remained in the past. "The Minister of Defense must submit appropriate proposals," the head of state added in his message to the Federal Assembly.
To date, the regiment includes two commandant battalions, which include several companies, an honor guard battalion, an automobile company and a support company, as well as a demining group. The Preobrazhensky men, led by the regiment commander in full dress, approved by the Ministry of Defense in 2008, decorate the most solemn festive events with the participation of the Minister of Defense and top officials of the state. With the participation of servicemen of the battalion, military parades are also held in Moscow. The honor guard battalion of the 154th separate commandant regiment took part in more than 35,000 special events.
The work of other elements of the 154th separate commandant regiment is no less important. According to the Ministry of Defense, the demining group is engaged in the detection, transportation and destruction of explosives, and the automobile company - in the delivery of the regiment's servicemen to the places where special events are held. The support company, in turn, serves in the internal orders of the regiment and at the checkpoints of the military automobile inspection.
