11th Command of Air Force and Air Defence
The Eastern Military District formed the 11th Army Air Force and Air Defense on 14 August 2015. It included aviation and anti-aircraft missile units and military units stationed in the Far East and Eastern Siberia. Now in the zone of responsibility of this association airspace over 11 subjects of Russia. The new army is equipped with the newest aircraft (Su-35S, Su-30SM and Su-30M2 fighters, Ka-52 and Mi-8AMTSh helicopters), as well as S-300, S-400 and Tor-M2U anti-aircraft missile systems.
The first time the army was formed on June 1, 1998 by merging the 1st Special Far Eastern Air Army and the 11th separate Red Banner Air Defense Army. In 2009 the army was reorganized into the 3rd Red Banner Air and Air Defense Command of the Eastern Military District. The third time was formed on August 1, 2015 by the reorganization of the 3rd Red Banner Air Force and Air Defense Command.
The Far Eastern region remained vulnerable in the defense plan for many years. This was facilitated by a number of significant factors: remoteness from the capital, a large extent of the coastline, the age limit of the majority of surface ships of the Pacific Fleet, the supply difficulties for the military groups based here. However, recently the situation began to change for the better.
Already in 2018 a new powerful army of air force and air defense, created on the basis of the forces of the Pacific Fleet, began to cover Kamchatka and Chukotka from the air attack of the probable enemy. The zone of responsibility of the operational association will be nothing less than the whole space from the Northern Kuriles to the Arctic island of Wrangel. That is, in fact, the entire north-east of the state. The 317th mixed aviation regiment deployed in Elizovo near Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, and the 53rd air defense division based there, constitute the basis of the new army's grouping. Here the headquarters of the operational association will be deployed. Already existing parts and connections will be strengthened - the source of the newspaper said that the army will have at least two divisions - aviation and air defense. "We need to understand clearly that we are not starting an arms race in the Far East, we are not shaking our arms and are not calling for war," military expert Mikhail Khodarenok told RIA Novosti. "In my opinion, we are simply trying to partially restore what was before. In the 1990s, the reduction of the air and air defense units in the Far East took the form of an epidemic, the fighter regiment in the Coal Mines near Anadyr was liquidated, two regiments on Sakhalin were destroyed, aviation was withdrawn from the Burevestnik base in the Kuriles, the 25th Air Defense Division was disbanded. The expert called the deployment of a new army a "return to common sense."
The heart of the new army - the city of Elizovo not far from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky - is already a serious military object. Based here, the 1532th SAM regiment of the 53rd Air Defense Division was one of the first to rearm on the latest S -400 Triumph SAM. Here in 2014, a detachment of unmanned aerial vehicles "Forpost" was formed, which in 2016 was replenished with the "Orlan-10" party. Elizovo is on duty around the clock to 30 of the fastest Russian fighter-interceptors MiG-31, based on anti-submarine helicopters Ka-27 and a squadron of anti-submarine aircraft Il-38 (including the most advanced Il-38N). However, according to some experts, it will not be enough to limit the areas of the new army's basing to Kamchatka.
