Gil / Spike / NT-Dandy - Descriptions
SPIKE-SR
The SPIKE-SR Short Range Anti-Tank Weapon is a low cost, Fire and Forget, man portable, short range, guided missile system that is highly lethal against various targets.
The man-portable, shoulder-fired anti-tank weapon is called the Gil, or "Short Spike"; the second, called Spike, has a greater range of around 4km. The "daddy of the family" was a long-range version designed to be launched from helicopters, known as the Dandy or "Long Spike".
The NTG/Gill and NTS/Spike are indistinguishable externally and have common propulsion of two the 2 periods of training that if erases km and gives controlable reach until 4km. The Gill/Spike is portable missiles anti-car of the type "go off-and-forgets" optimized for use for infantry, Forces Special and troops of fast reaction. The NTD/Dandy is the launched aerial version of helicopter.
The Unit of Command of Launcher (CLU) is common to the Gill/Spike and the operator can choose direct or high trajectory. The target system uses a diurne camera of TV with CCD (Charged Coupled Device) with zoom of 10 times and field of vision of 10 degrees. The weight of the CLU is of 5kg that it increases for 9kg with the addition of a camera of thermal image for nocturnal use. The camera of thermal image has a field 10 vision of 3,5x and zoom of x and can recognize targets until 3.000m. The diurne viewfinder has field of vision of 5 degrees with zoom of 10 times. The battery weighs 1kg.
The complete system with tripod of 2,9kg can be in lying, kneel or seated position and enters in operation in 30 seconds. To be used the shooter acquires the target and dirige the aiming, using the nocturnal or diurne viewfinder, for the target. The shooter then binds the missile that it locks in the target. The missile can be gone off after this process. The shooter can leave position and if hide or recharge and go off another missile. The hard recarregamento less than 15 seconds.
SPIKE-MR (Gill)
The Gill has 4 wings in the body and 4 back barbatanas of control that are opened after launching. The Gill weighs 13kg, has a length of 1,2m in the container and has war head double type HEAT in tandem being the minor of the classroom with diameter of 110mm and can penetrate homogeneous shield of 800mm being capable to penetrate any shield in an angle of diving of 30º. The operator acquires the target with aiming of the CLU and points head of search of the missile with respect to the target and goes off soon that the missile locks automatically. The missile uses an automatic high trajectory not to be that the direct detonation is chosen.
The Gil ATGW, manufactured by Rafael in Israel, has been in service with the IDF for some years. The Gil has two variants: Gil (Short Spike) with a range of 2.5 km, and the Spike with a range of 4 km. The conversion from one version to the other can be done in the base armory, by adding a fiber optic wire dispenser to the Gil as well as few other adjustments.
On a clear day, the Spike's maximum range is 4km. At night or in poor weather, the maximum range is reduced to 3km. The Gil can be fired from sitting, crouching and prone positions or while standing in a trench.
The Spike Anti Tank Missile, developed and produced by RAFAEL, represents a new generation in missile technology with a high rate precision and with modular adaptability to various platforms. The Spike has reach of 4km and uses the same fuselage and head of war in tandem, but it has additional fiber canal optics. The launching (acronym LOAL in English) with link of fiber has barring option after optics bringing up to date the target for targets beyond the target line (NLOS) that it allows to lock in a hill or house that this the front of the target. SPIKE-LR
The SPIKE-LR is a lightweight, Fire and Forget and Fire, Observe and Update, multi-purpose missile system with a range of up to 4,000 meters. State-of-the-art seeker and fiber-optic data communication link provide SPIKE-LR with the unique ability to:
- Update or switch targets after launch
- Achieve real-time intelligence and identify friends or foe
- Perform battle damage assessment
- Achieve extended range and pinpoint accuracy
- Minimize collateral damage
SPIKE-ER (NTD)
The NT Dandy, also known as "Long Spike", was developed by Israel's state-owned Rafael armaments company, based in Haifa. This new long-range, guided anti-tank missile is apparently far more advanced in design and capabilities than existing anti-armor projectiles. The missile, travelling at the relatively slow speed of between 150 meters and 200 meters per second, can hit targets up to 7.5km away.
The reach of the Dandy is of 6-10km and the head of thermal search of high performance allows to use long-range engagement. The operator can make correction of trajectory with link of fiber-optics. The system of link for fiber optics allows that the launching aircraft to observe and to track the target through the on-board system and can dive and to look to covering after the launching in the way "goes off and brings up to date" while it continues guiding the missile from an occult position.
At approximately 1.5 meters in length and 0.66mm in diameter and weighing 40kg, the Dandy is much the same size as the standard US-made TOW anti-tank missile, which is in use by some 40 countries, including Israel. Unlike the Gil, which is shoulder-fired and has fins that deploy after launching, the Dandy has fixed fins and is designed to be launched from helicopters. The missile is guided by an optic fibre during the initial stages of flight enabling the weapon to hug the terrain.
