Aditya MPV - Mine Protected Vehicle (MPV)

In 2010 three teams headed by Indian largest vehicle manufacturers Tata Motors, Ashok Leyland and Mahindra introduced Mine Protected Vehicle in anticipation of Indian Ministry of Defense procurement of hundreds of new mine protected vehicles. No orders were immediately forthcoming, and local market proepscts were further clouded in 2014 when the government decided to approach the US to purchase state-of-the-art mine resistant ambush protected (MRAP) vehicles, which the US forces might otherwise leave behind in Afghanistan after they pull-out of the country.

Aditya was India's first Mine Protected Vehicle. The Aditya vehicle was developed with know-how from Israel and was inducted by the army by November 2007 to provide increased protection to troops engaged in counter-terrorism operations. The army has projected a requirement for 1,400 such vehicles and given the green signal to induct 300. The army, which has 70 to 80 Casspirs, had projected a need for 400 to 500 such vehicles under its modernisation program to cope with mine attacks in Jammu and Kashmir.

In December 2001, India Defence Consultants {IDC} reported that 150 new landmine-resistant armored vehicles, worth $14 million, to augment the second-hand Casspir MPVs imported from South Africa were discussed and it likely that BEML (Bharat Earth Movers Limited) may supply these. In early November 2001 when Defence Secretary Yogendra Narain visited Moscow with Prime Minister A.B. Vajpayee he discussed acquiring MPVs from Russia.

Medak's Ordnance Factory supplied MPVs to Jharkand and Hyderabad Police Forces and had versions ready for the Army at lower costs. Ordnance Factory, Medak (OFMK) was established in the year 1987 to manufacture INFANTRY COMBAT VEHICLE(ICV) christened as SARATH and its variants. The foundation stone of the factory was laid down by the then Prime Minister SMT.INDIRA GANDHI on 19th July, 1984. Within a span of three years, it became an important supplier of Infantry Combat Vehicles to the Indian Army.

Although their total requirement has been estimated to be 1,500, more than 300 MPVs had already been supplied to the paramilitary and police for use in the anti-Maoist operations across the country. These MPVs, christened Aditya, are supplied by the Ordnance Factory, Medak, and also manufactured at Vehicle Factory Jabalpur. The indigenous mine-protected vehicle was planned to be mass-produced in two types, a Mahindra & Mahindra jeep model with a seating capacity of six and an Ashok Leyland model with a seating capacity of 12. The cost of the vehicles were reportedly cheaper than the Casspir MPVs that were being brought from South Africa, but nothing seems to have come of this plan.

Aditya MPV-I

The Aditya vehicle which was developed by DRDO provides increased protection to troops engaged in counter-terrorism operations. The MPV-I combines ballistic and mine protection. Its armor blocks a range of bullets (.62 mm x 51 NATO ball, 7.62 mm x 39 AK-47 ball, and 5.56 mm INSAS lead core MV 925m/sec) from up to 45 degrees from the top and up to 90 degrees from the sides at a distance of 10m. It can withstand 21kg of TNT under the center of any wheel and 14kg under the crew compartment, and its V-shaped, steel monocoque hull directs the force of the blast away from the occupants.

In the Maoist heartland of Chhattisgarh, MPVs disappointed. In early 2005, there was euphoria after all 17 policemen travelling in an MPV survived a Naxal IED attack in Narayanpur, Bastar. It was short-lived, as the Naxals modified their tactics. In their next attack, in Bijapur district in September 2005, they replaced the 10-kilo Narayanpur IED with a massive 40-kg IED, targeting an MPV procured from the Ordnance Factory, Medak. The force of that blast threw the MPV up in the air, killing 24 CRPF jawans whose bodies were barely recognisable. After that, the security forces in Chhattisgarh shrank from travelling in MPVs, except on blacktopped highways where no IEDs can be buried. In July 2008, the Maoists blew up an MPV carrying 24 CRPF and Chhattisgarh policemen. In June 2011, 10 security personnel were killed in another IED blast on an MPV in Katekalyan, again in Dantewada.

In January 2012, led by officer-in charge of Bhandaria police station, Rajbali Chowdhary, troopers of VII battalion of Jharkhand Armed Police accompanied local BDO and Zilla Parishad chairperson to resolve a dispute over a health center. The policemen who were travelling in the Mine Protected Vehicle, or MPV, could not survive an IED blast initiated by the Maoists. Maoists then ambushed the policemen following the blast, opening fire from point-blank range, taking away all the police weapons. Finally, the Maoists set fire to the toppled MPV.

This is not the first instance when an MPV has failed to protect its occupants against an IED attack. More than 200 troopers are estimated to have lot their lives while using the MPV in the three years 2009-2012. These MPVs are designed to withstand blasts of up to 14 kg of RDX, as used in conventional military landmines. But the Maoists don't use military landmines or RDX-based IEDs. They use fertilisers, gelatins, emulsions and slurries in their IEDs, which have a heaving effect and not a shattering one which RDX produces. Because Aditya copies the South African design, it can't withstand a heaving explosion which topples the MPV over, trapping the passengers inside. The CRPF seized a Maoist military magazine, Awam-e-Jung from the Orissa-Andhra Pradesh border which revealed the Maoist tactics against the MPV. In an article titled 'Mine-proof Vehicle -- Its Shortcomings', the Maoists identified the vulnerabilities in the MPV while advising the cadres in great detail on how to 'handle' it. "It is an utter lie to call it a mine-proof vehicle. The vehicle is being propagated as mine-proof to boost the morale of forces that have lost it," the article said.

WER'WOLF Mk II Modular Mine Protected Vehicle

BEML Mine Protected Vehicle is used in transporting personnel quickly across minefield. The vehicle is with armoured protection all around including underbelly, so that when a mine is exploded under the vehicle, only the tyre which has gone over the mine will be thrown out / damaged and can be replaced by another tyre assembly and carry on across the mine field and take the troops to the other side. It can also be used as a pilot vehicle to clear the mines so that non protected vehicles can follow the vehicle without damage by the mines. This makes the vehicle safe lane for other vehicles.

Yuktirath (MPV MK-III)

Originally based on the design of South African Casspir landmine-protected personnel carrier vehicle, Aditya was later upgraded to weather blasts of higher intensity. Ordnance Factory, Medak was declared as the winner of GOLDEN PEACOCK INNOVATIVE PRODUCT/SERVICE AWARD - 2016 for "Modernised Mine Protected Vehicle (MMPV)" by the Awards Jury under the Chairmanship of Justice M. N. Venkatachaliah, former Chief Justice, Supreme Court of India. The award was presented during the annual Dubai Global Convention organized by Institute of Directors at 'The Meydan Hotel' in Dubai. V-shaped monocoque hull integrated with indigenously available auto aggregates (like TATA 713). Transportation of 8 crew members including driver.
