Ashok Leyland Mine Protection Vehicle
In 2010 three teams headed by Indian largest vehicle manufacturers Tata Motors, Ashok Leyland and Mahindra introduced Mine Protected Vehicle in anticipation of Indian Ministry of Defense procurement of hundreds of new mine protected vehicles. No orders were immediately forthcoming, and local market proepscts were further clouded in 2014 when the government decided to approach the US to purchase state-of-the-art mine resistant ambush protected (MRAP) vehicles, which the US forces might otherwise leave behind in Afghanistan after they pull-out of the country.
Ashok Leyland's Mine Protection Vehicle is based on the Marauder. IT offers 14 kg TNT equivalent blast protection on hull and 21 Kg TNT equivalent blast protection under wheels.
In 2012 Ashok Leyland announced that they want to be a significant player in the Multi-Purpose Vehicle (MPV) passenger vehicle segment and that is why at the Delhi Auto Expo, they showcased the car that will be their first entry in this segment. However, after having failed to rake in the desired sales, the commercial vehicle maker decided to exit the MPV business. The production of the Stile MPV has been stopped and the company said that there is a possibility that they will reenter the segment if they feel they have the right product. The Ashok Leyland Stile was born thanks to the company's joint venture with Japanese car maker Nissan Motor Company. The Stile was part of a 4 car deal with the Nissan alliance; the others being the Dost and Partner and one more.
