Kerala - Background

The influence of the sea has a profound effect on the history of Kerala. Kerala has a great maritime history having relationship with China, the gulf countries and Europe. The Portuguese missionaries who came to Kerala in South India in the sixteenth century were instrumental in introducing Latin Christianity in Kerala.

As a leading state of India, Kerala has achieved remarkable progress, especially in protecting and strengthening of the democratic system and its foundations based on the principles of secularism, gender equality, empowerment of women and children. The state has the highest literacy rate of 93.91% and highest life expectancy of 74 years. The state also has the highest media exposure in India with newspapers being published in nine different languages, mainly in English and Malyalam.

A tiller or a mower and women planting seedlings. Women at work spinning coir. Dense plantations further eastward. Kerala is all these and more.

By April 2020 Kerala flattened its curve of COVID-19 infection with few positive cases being reported and more people getting recovered in the last few days. After 100 days Kerala, to a greater extend had managed to contain the spread of the disease which is creating catastrophic situation across the globe. Through aggressive testing, contact tracing, effective communication,strict surveillance, use of technology, larger intervention from Government, local bodies, self help groups and public at large had helped Kerala to take hold of the situation.
