Pansarterrängbil 360 (Patgb 360)
Pansarterrängbil [Armored Off-road vehicle] 360 is a wheeled combat vehicles manufactured by the Finnish defense contractor Patria. The vehicle is manufactured by the Finnish defense group Patria's XA-360 AMV in the original version. The Swedish Armed Forces ordered 113 pieces in various versions, including troop transport, medical, repair and management vehicles. The Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) launched the formal procurement of 113 pansarterrängbilar type Armoured Wheeled Vehicle (AMV) XA-360 8x8 from Patria. This vehicle was the winner in the competitive procurement carried performed in two acts in project AWV (Armoured Wheeled Vehicle).
The Patgb 360 battalions can move between e.g. Revingehed and Gothenburg / Stockholm, with relatively well-preserved combat value. This is something that is more difficult for the 122/90 Battalion Battalions. In addition, shooting battalion that took a few hours to prepare a defense can definitely give a mechanized attacker a lot of headaches. But even if they may be in place first, what can they really do once they arrive? Patgb 360 lacks relevant weapons to meet the attacker and that it could not add much. The vehicles certainly lacked the firepower provided by Strv 122 and Strf 9040, but added a built-in capability for tactical and operational mobility that was lacking on the 122/90 units.
The main weapon of the 360 ??battalions is not its vehicles, but the weapon systems that are in them. Soldiers, machine guns, anti-tank weapons, mines and indirect fire systems. This, combined with the speed of maneuverability provided by the Patgb 360, can create excellent connections for those who can use them properly.
The basic order for 113 pansarterrängbilar distributed in the following variants:
- 79 Patgb (troop)
- 16 Stripatgb (command)
- 11 Sjtppatgb (ambulance)
- 7 Reppatgb (repair)
- First vehicle delivered second half of 2012
- First Company delivered first half of 2013
- Complete battalion delivered the first half of 2014 The construction of the maintenance system AMV
The first was delivered to the Swedish Armed Forces in 2013. In 2019, the industry continued to supply system equipment to Patgb 360. Despite this, the system is not yet therefinally delivered, due to delays and changes to the included subsystems. Some part ofthe documentation will be finalized in 2019, but some parts will not be finalized until Q22020.
It had since the first deliveries in 2003 has become a big seller among European armed forces, not least for service in connection with international operations. Part of the explanation is that the design is modular, which means that the chassis is common to a range of variants of the vehicle. This can then be supplemented with various towers, weapons systems, sensors and other equipment. The Swedish vehicles have such a strong reinforcement that makes the vehicle more capable of resisting blasts.
In the mid-1990s it was clear that the Finnish Defence Forces were interested in finding a replacement for the Patria armored vehicles - called "Pasi" by the Finns - short for Panssari Sisu, from the previous company name Sisu Auto. The 6x6 armored vehicles were produced in different series - partly in the original series XA-180 (Which over the years has come to be upgraded in more modern versions), and in any more modern 200 series. Basically however, these older armored vehicles were a heavy car which, like the Swedish "KP-cars", had been equipped with an armored body. The Finnish solution had its starting point the SISU SA-150 6x6 truck, and Pasi employees turned many identical components. Over 700 copies were manufactured in a series XA-180 vehicles (including the further developed versions). On the side deliveries to Finland went also exports to Sweden, Ghana, Ireland, Norway and Austria. They came preferably be used as workhorses in UN service. It was in this tough environment that the truck-based construction got the blame.
A new family of XA vehicles must above all have better ballistic protection and better protection against mines, larger capacity and better terrainability. The Finnish army headquarters sounded in 1995 conduct a study on various described armored vehicle concepts. Patria presented different concept proposals and 1996 success came to a 8x8 vehicle was most suited to replace the existing 6x6 vehicles. By this time, the Nordic countries countries (excluding Iceland) have joined forces in a preliminary investigation group (FUG) Pansra - the vehicle within NORDAC seemed an opportunity for multilateral cooperation work for the development of a new generation of track and wheel combat vehicles. The draft mission requirements and specification gave valuable insights even to the national programs.
When Sweden in 1999 sought to procure new Armored Wheeled Vehicle, the Finish project was a natural focus. The AMV emerged as a convenient vehicle, which represented something new and as with its modular structure could form ideal "interim solution". The Swedish need was urgent and the Swedish Army had no time to wait. The concept study at the Finnish Defence Forces (FDF) was completed in 1999-2000, and this resulted in the development of the AMV. Already in November 2001 the first prototype was complete, and successful test results gave Patria continued confidence evaluating vehicles before going into mass production. Patria had already in December 2002 received its first series of contracts at AMV, with the Polish Ministry of Defense.
The most obvious external difference between the Armed Forces two armored SUVs is that with the designation 360 has eight wheels, unlike the 203 having six. Armored Terrain Vehicle armament comprises a weapon station which can carry different weapons options such as heavy machine gun (12.7 mm) or grenade launchers (40 mm). The armored Off-road vehicle 360 ??has a very good protection against mines and has good mobility. Movement is made possible by an advanced hydraulic suspension system, and even though the vehicle weighs 27.5 tons reaches speeds of 120 km/h on the road. The vehicle runs on all eight wheels have independent suspension and a twelve-liter, Scania engine that develops 483 horsepower.
