Chinese 122mm Rocket Launchers are employed in several variants with different rocket quantities mounted on wheeled and tracked vehicles. The Multi-Barrel Rocket Launcher (MBRL) has either 24 or 40 tubes arranged in three lines of eight tubes or four lines of ten tubes each. All the tubes are parallel to each other and mounted co-axially on a cradle. The SR-4 is a development of the Type 81, featuring 40 tubes arranged into two pods. The range is 50 km.

The Type 81 (40-round) launcher is carried on a OQ261 Honyan 6X6 truck chassis, the Type 83 (24-round) MRS is mounted on the rear of 6X6 cross-country chassis, and the Type 90 (40-round) is mounted on the Tiema SC2030 6X6 truck. The Type 90 system incorporates a 40 round rocket launcher on a 6x6 truck chassis with provisions for an additional 40 rounds for rapid reloading. After launch, the reloading process can be completed within 3 minutes, providing additional firepower with quick turnarounds.

The Type 89 122mm 40-tube Crawler Rocket Launcher, also known as the PHZ89 122mm Rocket Launcher, is a new generation of self-developed crawler-type self-propelled rocket launchers developed by our country. It consists of a weapon system and a chassis. The Type 89 (40-round) is fully armored with the same chassis as the Type 83 152mm self-propelled gun-howitzer. The Type 89, a Chinese tank chassis variant of the Russian BM-21 rocket launcher, can fire 40 122mm rockets in 20 seconds. The launcher is at the back of the vehicle, and the reload pack at front. In the early 1980s, Harbin No. 1 Machinery Factory and Hubei Jiangshan Machinery Factory jointly developed a 122mm self-propelled rocket launcher system equipped with a crawler chassis. The system was originally intended for export. The design of this new rocket launcher system was completed in 1985. At that time, due to a lack of international users, it did not enter the mass production stage. In 1986, the People's Liberation Army selected it as the next-generation rocket launcher system for the armored force. When the People's Liberation Army selected this rocket launcher, it also proposed certain improved designs, including requirements for automatic launch and loading systems, 12.7 mm anti-aircraft machine guns, and noise reduction. The 122mm rocket launcher system prototype improved in accordance with the new requirements came out in February 1987, followed by a series of tests. During the test, the range exceeded 30,000 kilometers and 707 ammunition fired. It was finally officially finalized as PHZ89 in February 1988 and was approved for mass production. The main contractor is China North Industries Group Corporation (CNGC), which is produced by Harbin No. 1 Machinery Factory (674 Factory) and Hubei Jiangshan Machinery Factory (5137 Factory). .

A similar configuration is featured in a previously undisclosed and un-designated 40-round system that was apparently seen in public for the first time at the October 1999 parade in Beijing celebrating the 50th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. This system is mounted on a variant of the Type 85 Armored Personnel Carrier, also known as YW 531H and the M-1967 APC, which is the 5 roadwheel successor to the YW 531.

Ammunition used with the MBRL is in the form of a rocket which consists of one piece. Warhead is attached with rocket motor. A fixed amount of propellant is contained in the rocket motor. The rocket is stabilized with a slow spin.

The Type 81 122mm High Explosive rocket is olive drab with black markings. The rocket weighs 66.8 kilograms (147.3 pounds). This rocket may be found equipped with an ICM fragmentation warhead (model unknown). The ICM warhead contains 4,100 steel balls. The precise lengths of the two rockets are as follows: (a) With HE warhead: 2,873 millimeters (113.11 inches); (b) With enhanced frag warhead: 2,870 millimeters (113.00 inches). The warhead is steel.

The WS-1E is the 122mm multiple rocket system developed by SCAIC as a successor to the PLA's current Type 81 122mm rocket system. It is similar to the Type 90 122mm rocket system, but did not enter production.

Since 1966, the construction of the Sichuan Automobile Factory borne entirely by the domestic, while the introduction of models have also been some improvement. The plant began production in 1974 of the Red Rock CQ260 heavy off-road vehicles. In 1968, according to the overall arrangements for third-line construction, and by the Beijing Automobile Works Beijing Automobile Gear Factory Shaanxi Auto China established another production base of heavy-duty off-road vehicle. In 1975, the loading capacity of 5 tons of self-developed brand Yan'an (Shaanxi Automobile license after) SX250 (6 6) military off-road vehicle in this production.

The SX250 and CQ261 basically the same: are the 6 6 all-wheel drive, all can be good to sit with 4 double driving the first floor flat, spare aircraft were in the car and driving between buildings; both are water-cooled diesel engine with high-low points in the five-speed gearbox drive and help with the pressure of the dry clutch. The East is Red LT665 is different, SX250 and CQ261 using a progressive differential lock.

The main application for the SX250 and CQ261 in the armed forces are for the artillery units, pulling heavy artillery. In addition SX250 Type 81 chassis was also used for 40 122-mm rocket launchers, field filling fuel transport vehicles, heavy mechanized bridges and equipment. SX250 also achieved a domestic heavy-duty off-road vehicles exported in large quantities breakthrough. On October 1, 1984, SX250, CQ261, respectively, as the Type 81 122 mm rocket launchers and naval missile delivery vehicles participated in the National Day parade tractor, this is the first Chinese-made heavy-duty off-road vehicle to participate in the National Day military parade, and participate in the parade along with traction medium-range, long-range and intercontinental to-surface missiles in the Yellow card JN252 (8 8) heavy-duty off-road vehicles.

In 1985, the state imprted from Germany international advanced level mechanical gearbox and ZF KHD413 series air-cooled engine technology, then these techniques are used to XC2200. In 1986, XC2200 design finalized and put into mass production. And made the first generation of heavy-duty off-road vehicle than, XC2200's high-speed capacity significantly increased to a maximum speed of 85 km / h; car fitted with the ZF5S110GPA transmission has nine forward and one reverse gear, the use of a dual H-shift devices, and high-low gear shift lever into one, simplifying the operation; wheel, the axle differential lock between both; cab interior and display lights, warning lights, control system than the first generation of heavy-duty off-road vehicles greatly improved, markedly improved driver comfort. Now, XC2200 has gradually become the Army's main heavy-duty off-road vehicles, in addition to the tractor as heavy artillery, the use of its equipment to the chassis also converted 90-40 122-mm rocket launchers, WS-1 multi-barrel rocket system. China newly developed Type 90 122 mm 40 wheeled rocket with intensive firepower, good mobility and easy to maintain good performance and is extremely useful field artillery troops and equipment. The equipment is mainly used to suppress, destroy the enemy's effective strength, fire facilities, technology weapons, assembled motorized infantry, armored vehicles and self-propelled guns, etc., can be used to deal with such as buildings, command bunkers and other hard targets, but also for coastal defense against enemy ships or landing craft.

The rocket carrying vehicle uses 7.5-ton "Iron Horse" off-road vehicles, the total system weighs 20 tons, maximum speed of 85 km / h, continuous driving distance of 600 kilometers. It can provide rapid intensive firepower, range of 30 km, automatic loading launch, loading time of less than 3 seconds. As long as the operator manipulating buttons, you can finish in the cockpit aiming, loading and launching the whole process automatic positioning time is only 3 seconds. The gun mount 40 rockets can be units or salvo. 40 rounds a volley just 18-20 seconds. Its level of fire 0-55 degrees, the direction of fire -102 to +102 degrees, march 9840 mm length, width 2500 mm, height 3245 mm. The gun can be equipped with various types of ammunition, including high explosive, high-explosive balls picture and so on. Equipped with a 122 mm long-range rockets is a low-speed rotation, fin-stabilized rockets, which includes warheads, engines and stabilizing devices.

Two of the latest Chinese artillery weapons made their exercise debuts in plateau regions organized by the People's Liberation Army (PLA) Xinjiang Military Command and Tibet Military Command, with analysts saying on 28 July 2021 that these weapons are particularly effective on plateaus. An artillery unit under a regiment affiliated with the PLA Xinjiang Military Command organized a live-fire exercise with newly commissioned equipment for the first time in a snowy plateau region at an elevation of more than 5,000 meters. The new tube-artillery equipment is likely the PLZ-07 122-millimeter-caliber self-propelled howitzer.

A new multiple rocket launcher system, made its debut in a recent exercise with the PLA Tibet Military Command, according to a report by China Central Television (CCTV) on 24 July 2021. The new rocket artillery looked similar to the PHL-11 self-propelled multiple rocket launcher system, as both use a wheeled chassis and fire 122-millimeter-caliber rockets. However, the new rocket artillery only runs on four wheels and has 20 rocket launch tubes, while the PHL-11 runs on six wheels and has 40 launch tubes, eastday.com said.

Unlike many other weapons and types of equipment that could offer a lower performance due to the lack of oxygen on plateaus, artillery weapons could perform even better in such areas, since the air resistance is smaller, and that is why they are some of the most important weapons for plateau operations.
