Qingdao Beihai Shipbuilding Heavy Industry Co., Ltd. (BSIC), first established in 1898 and is now one of the large key-shipyards under the China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (CSIC). Companies registered capital of 1.05 billion yuan, the investment side of Beijing Jianlong Heavy Industry Group Co., Ltd., Qingdao Huatong owned Capital Operation (Group) Co., Ltd. 78% stake and 22%. Under the wholly-owned subsidiary Qingdao Sailing Ship Co., Ltd.

A shipyard, believed to be the largest of its kind in China, was under construction in 2002 at Haixiwan Gulf in Qingdao, in east China's Shandong province. The shipyard would have the designed capacity to repair 206 ships and build new ships with a total volume of 2 million dead weight tons (dwt) annually. Covering an area of 260 hectares, the shipyard is equipped with two deep-water wharves, each 4,000 meters in length, with the capacity to accommodate six 300,000-dwt vessels, two ship repair yards and two ship-making yards. The total cost of the shipyard is estimated at 400 million yuan (US$48 million). The repair yards were completed in October 2002, while the entire shipyard was scheduled to begin operations by 2004.

BSIC have more than 330 hectares of land, 9 km of coastline, nearly 6 km of wharf length, two shipbuilding dry docks (500,000 dwt and 300,000 dwt each), two ship-repairing dry docks (300,000 dwt and 150,000 dwt each), one floating dock for ship-repairing (100,000 dwt), and relative equipments & facilities (including 4 sets of 600 ton gantry crane, one set of 350 ton gantry and one set of 200 ton gantry crane). The annual production capability will be: 2,000,000 dwt of shipbuilding ( 4,680,000 dwt in future ), 200 million US Dollars of ship-repairing turnover, 4 sets of offshore platform, and 500 boats of lifeboat. The BSIC will mainly undertake various shipbuilding projects of commercial vessels and offshore engineering projects (including various triangle beam structures, drilling platforms and FPSO, etc.), such as various tanker ships, container ships, large sized bulk cargo vessels and other various ships.

It moved to Haixiwan of Qingdao Economic and Technical Development Zone in 2004 and began to build the Haixiwan Shipbuilding & Ship-repairing Base, the new ship-repairing sector and it has been set for production since 2008. Shandong province has a coastline of over 3,000 km and 1,150 km inland navigable mileage. The province has the highest concentration of seaport in China, with 473 seaport berths, including 197 over 10,000-ton berths. In 2010, the throughput of Shandong provinces ports totaled 925 million tons, ranking the second in China. In terms of foreign trade throughput, Shandong province belongs to the top in China. Qingdao Port, Rizhao Port, and Yantai Port are the three key ports in Shandong province. Qingdao Port is has the highest throughout with 350 million tons in 2010, followed by Rizhao Port with 225 million tons and Yantai Port with 150 million tons. Shandong province is the only province with three ports whose throughput in total is over 100 million tons in China

Qingdao, Yantai, Weihai are three major shipbuilding bases in Shandong province. In 2010, they achieved a turnover of 32.5 billion yuan (3.6 billion euros) and completion volume of 2.94 million DWT, accounting for 63 percent and 98 percent of the provinces total respectively. Moreover, key shipbuilders in Shandong province have seen a rapid expansion, and 18 of the key shipbuilders have achieved their turnovers over 1 billion yuan (110 million euros).
