Honorable and Meritorious Troops
The military flag is a symbol of the army and carries the honor of the army. The armies of major powers at home and abroad attach great importance to the flag. Obtaining the flag of honor is a milestone for a unit. During the war, many soldiers spared their lives to protect the flag. Seizing the enemy's flag was regarded as one of the military's important military achievements. For this reason, it has long been a similar practice at home and abroad to display military honor flags during military parades.
Comparing the armies of major powers, some units of the US military also have their own "honorary titles", such as the "Rock of the Marne" of the Army's 3rd Division. However, titles like the US military are more similar to nicknames and have not been officially awarded. Judging from the way of naming meritorious places and hero models, yhr Chinese army is more similar to the Soviet army. However, the PLA did not copy mechanically such titles as "Guard" that did not conform to the Chinese army's traditions and culture, and it was more personalized.
On October 1, 2019, in front of Tiananmen Square, the battle flag team composed of representatives of the entire army of honorable and meritorious troops came from the army, and the battle flag team was officially read. At the parade celebrating the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, along with the magnificent "Steel Torrent March", the 100 flag banners of the battle flag team passed through Tiananmen Square, becoming one of the important highlights of this unprecedented scale military parade.
This is not the first time that PLA battle flags have appeared in a military parade. In the parade on the 70th anniversary of the victory of the Chinese People's Anti-Japanese War and the World Anti-Fascist War in 2015, the trekking team was led for the first time by the heroic and honorary flags of the heroic troops participating in the anti-Japanese war. Some of these trekking teams are named after one of the honored troops, such as the "Fighting Model Company" British Model Forces Team that attacked Yangmingbao at night, and the "Mengmenguan Ambush War Company" British Model Forces Team. Some of the honorary titles of these troops are also on the 100 battle flags of the 70th anniversary parade of the founding of New China, such as "White-Blade Fighting Hero Company" and "Pingxingguan Battle Assault Company".
To celebrate the 70th anniversary of the founding of New China, 100 battle flags were regrouped and fluttered in the wind; 100 heroes were magnificent and enduring. The honorary flag of this battle flag team was selected by the Political Work Department of the Central Military Commission from the selection of the entire army. There are 24 sides in each of the five major theaters of east, south, west, north, and middle, mainly from the army, navy, air force, and joint logistics. The five services of the support force and the armed police force have a total of 120 honorary battle flags, of which 100 are officially reviewed. After the National Day military parade, all 100 battle flags and 20 backup battle flags were put into the collection of the Chinese People's Revolutionary Military Museum.
In the early years, the origins of the war flag units were complex. They were issued by grass-roots units at the military region level, as well as by the Central Military Commission or the Party Central Committee. Some heroes have been awarded to multiple troops, and there is a certain degree of name duplication. Some units are named after the fighting heroes, and some units are named after the locations where the battles are awarded, which is obviously easier to remember and distinguish.
The 100 battle flags were selected by the five major theaters to participate in the military parade, representing the various historical periods of our army from the land revolution, the war of resistance against Japan, the war of liberation, the war of resistance against the United States and the United States to the homeland defense and self-defense counterattack after the founding Most of the awards obtained at various levels were won in the flames of war (97), and only three units received awards for logistics, party building, and mass work.
The inheritance of the red gene started from the Red Army period. For example, the " Qiandu Wujiang Model Company" and "Daduhe Company" military flags displayed this time were awarded to the heroes who opened the way for the Red Army during the Long March. Also on display at this time were the "Five Model Red Regiment" and "Model Red Twelve Regiment" and other military flags that were born during the Agrarian Revolutionary War. The military flags that were born during the War of Resistance Against Japan included the "Huangyadong Defence Warrior Regiment", "Huangtuling Heroes Cannon Company", "White Blade Fighting Hero Company", "Pingxingguan Battle Assault Company", etc.
During the war of resistance against Japan, most of the units awarded honorary titles were concentrated at the company level. By the time of the Liberation War, there were a lot more honorary titles at the camp and regiment levels. The highest-ranked group was "Linfen Brigade", such as "Luoyang Camp", "Xiangyang Special Troupe", "Jinan First Troupe" and "Tashan Hero Troupe". This was the army's only honorary title of division and brigade so far.
The anti-US aid to the DPRK is a battle in which the People's Army has fought internationally. Under the unprecedented disparity with the enemy's power, it must be compensated by the heroic and tenacious fighting spirit, "Thirty-eight-line sharp sword hero company", "Yueyue Mountain Hero Class", "Linjin River Breakthrough Hero Company", "Daofeng Mountain Camp" "Zhongyuanshan Hero Company" Many glorious titles and blood-stained battle flags are always associated with the place names of the Korean Peninsula. Some troops were unknown in the past and became famous in the battle of blood and fire. For example, the 15th Army of the Volunteer Army, on the battle of Ganling, played two great banners: "Huang Jiguang Hero Company" and "Eight Company of Valiant and Tenacity." Because of his outstanding military achievements, the army was reorganized into the only airborne army of the army after returning home.
In the past, troops that have made great contributions will not be so easily reorganized. For example, before the eleventh major disarmament, the first seven troops to enter the Korean War, the 38th, 39th, 40th, and 42nd army on the Western Front, and the 20th, 26th, and 27th Army on the Eastern Front were all retained. These troops are really abolished, and their honorary titles are usually inherited by a certain army, which is also the practice of foreign troops. For example, the banner of "Xiangyang Special Troupe" displayed this time was inherited by a reserve communications force stationed in Jiangsu.
In addition, the theater is also very concerned about troops with honorary titles. For example, the army organs in the southern theater approved the status quo of some of the heroes after the reform to their affiliated forces and recorded the number in the record. As the reform progressed, they organized forces to sort out the heroic forces they belonged to, and compiled them into a directory and brief deed books, so that the heroic forces also had a "roster."
In recent years, the military reform had been relatively vigorous. The group army had been reduced from 18 to 13, and there must be some troops to be split. How does the title of such intangible assets "separate"? The 83 Army Group's approach was to formulate uniformly the principle standards for the continuation of the army's history and the inheritance of fine traditions, "first the number, then the main body, then the station." First look at who inherited the designation, then look at the unit where the main body of the troops is, and finally look at where the troops are stationed. After the traditional resources are sorted out by the organs, they go with the new units.
The military reform also brings another problem. Under the new model of "group army-brigade-battalion", the regiment is gone. How can the title of regiment be inherited? In fact, the honorary title is attached to the army, and is not limited to a certain establishment.
Naval ships are the most typical. For example, the title of “Sea Tigers” displayed this time has been passed down for 4 generations. Initially, the title was awarded by the Ministry of National Defense to the 588 boat that performed outstandingly in the battle of the East of Chongwu. Since then, the 556 boat, 695 boat and Quanzhou ship have successively inherited this title. As a 056-type frigate, the Quanzhou ship not only inherited the title of "boat", but also inherited the port number 588 of the original "sea tiger boat".
In this hundred-faced battle flag, there is a "hero tank" , because there is no further information, it is not clear which one is referring to. But it is clear that this is also inherited. For example, during the military parade of the founding ceremony, Dong Laifu piloted the "Kongchen" tank, which was a seized Japanese 97 type tank, and the second generation was a domestic 59 type tank. In 1984, on the 35th National Day parade, Dong Laifu's son, Dong Jixiong, the 16th captain of the hero, drove the hero to the Tiananmen Square and became a story. Today, the "Heroes" is the newest 99-type main battle tank, fighting for Zhu Rihe's exercises.
Obtaining the military flag is actually obtaining the title of honor, and obtaining the title of honor is the highest honor a PLA unit can obtain. Since the establishment of our army, our army has experienced countless battles, and the number of honorary units is only three thousand. It can be said that this honor, which is higher than first-class merit, is very rare.
On February 1, 1951, the then General Staff of the People's Liberation Army formulated and promulgated the first "Disciplinary Regulations (Draft)" of the People's Army after the founding of New China. There were four types of collective awards for advanced units: general order awards, frontal photographs awarded to military flag, awarding honorary titles, and awarding commemorative medals.
On August 1, 1957, in the Disciplinary Regulations promulgated by the Ministry of National Defense, merits were divided into three grades: third grade, second grade, and first grade, and they have been used to this day. Article 34 of Section 6 of the "Decree" also stipulates: For units that have received first-class merit awards, they can also be awarded glorious titles to the army, showing that the difference between the title and the first-class merit at that time was unclear. On February 1, 1964, the Ministry of National Defense issued the 10th "Disciplinary Regulations". Chapter 2 Awards stipulates that the reward items are divided into awards, third-grade merits, second-grade merits, first-grade merits and honorary title five. Levels. On June 9, 1990, Article 13 of the "Disciplinary Regulations" issued by the Central Military Commission continued to use these five levels for unit awards, and pointed out that "in order, the awards are the lowest awards, and the honorary title is the highest award."
In August 2012, the Directory of Heroic Model Units of the Chinese People's Liberation Army and Armed Police Force, led by the former General Political Organization Department, was published. It included only 3,114 model units in various historical periods of the entire army from 1927 to 2012 and 85 years. Among them, some units have outstanding historical honors but have not been officially recognized, such as "iron fist division" "flying tiger division", etc. can only be called "honored". Therefore, there are fewer "official certifications", which shows how rare is the honorary title.
The honorary title on the military flag also has rules to follow. The first is "the place of meritorious service / combat". The Huaye 3 battalion that first entered Luoyang won the title of "Luoyang Camp" for its merits. The second is based on the meritorious way of fighting spirit. For example, the 6th Company of the former 1st Army Group has two titles of "Hard Bone Company" and "Hero Six Company" due to its tough fighting style. It is the only unit with the double title in the whole army. The third is to be a model hero / famous general. For example, "Ye Ting Army", "Zuoquan Independent Battalion", "Wang Keqin Pai", "Dong Cun Rui Ban", etc. Most of these names belong to grassroots commanders. There is another type of battle flag that cannot be ignored, that is, the flag that demonstrates the political superiority of our army, such as the "Mass Work Model Regiment" and "Tianjin Battle Three Good Companies-Good Fighting, Good Discipline, and Unity".
Most of the war flag units received awards during the war years before and after the founding of the People's Republic of China. It is worth mentioning that a large number of heroes and hero units emerged during the period of the Anti-American Aid Korea. During this period, the number of war flag units appeared very intensively. Of the 100 battle flag units, about 6 were obtained during the Agrarian Revolutionary War, about 13 were obtained during the Anti-Japanese War, about 21 were obtained during the Liberation War, and about 14 were obtained during the War of Resistance Against Aid and North Korea. 1 in the self-defense counterattack of India, 1 in the self-defense counterattack of Treasure Island, 5 in the counterattack of self-defense of Vietnam, and about 15 in the peaceful era after the founding of the country. 23 units to determine the acquisition period.
Among the 100 battle flag units, brigade (1), regiment (24), battalion (14), company (51), platoon (5), and squad (5) according to the size of the awarded units. It can be seen that the army pays particular attention to the cohesion of company-level combat power. Among the 100 battle flag units, there are 91 units from the army, 4 units from the navy, 4 units from the air force, and 1 unit from the armed police. Explain that our army's fine traditions and achievements still come from the army.
