The Lanzhou Military Region Air Force was originally established in 1950 as the Xibei (Northwest) MRAF and was redesignated as the Lanzhou MRAF in May 1955. The Lanzhou Military Region Air Force is a campaign corps of the Chinese People's Liberation Army Air Force stationed in the Lanzhou Military Region. It belongs to the establishment of the Air Force and is under the dual leadership of the Air Force and Lanzhou Military Region. Leading and commanding the air force units stationed in Shaanxi, Gansu, Ningxia, Qinghai, Xinjiang 5 provinces, autonomous regions, Tibet Ali, and western Inner Mongolia. It is mainly responsible for air defense operations in the area, air offensive operations, and coordinated army operations.

On September 10, 1951, the Central Military Commission decided to establish the Air Force Command of the Northwest Military Region of the Chinese People's Liberation Army. In December, the Northwest Military Command Aviation Division and the 6th Army Headquarters were jointly organized and established in Lanzhou (from June 1952 to November 1969 in Xi'an). The agency has a headquarters, political department, logistics department, engineering department, and cadre management department. On May 15, 1954, it was renamed the Northwest Military Region Air Force Department. On May 6, 1955, it was renamed the Lanzhou Military Region Air Force Command. On August 22, 1958, it was renamed the Lanzhou Military Region Air Force. In February 1970, the military area air force agencies were reorganized into the headquarters, the political department, and the logistics department. In February 1976, the Aeronautical Engineering Department was added, and in September 1993, it was renamed the Equipment Technology Department. In December 1998, it was reorganized as the Equipment Department.

After the establishment of the Northwest Military Region, the air force organization first took over and led the two preparatory aviation teams originally led by the Northwest Military Region. In May 1952, an aviation division was formed. In December 1953, an aviation school stationed in Xi'an was placed under the leadership of the Air Force Command of the Northwest Military Region. In April 1957, the air force stationed in the Sichuan area was transferred to the Lanzhou Military Region Air Force Command Organization (in October 1965, it was changed to the Chengdu Military Region Air Force Command Post organization). In the second half of 1962, the air force stationed in the Hotan area of ??Xinjiang and the Lhasa area of ??Tibet returned to the Lanzhou Military Region Air Force Organization (in January 1969, the Tibet Lhasa Region Air Force Force was changed to the Chengdu Military Region Air Force Command Post organization). In November 1964 and November 1969, two air force headquarters were established. In February 1975, the Lanzhou Military Region Air Force Air Force Academy was reorganized directly under the Air Force into the Lanzhou Military Region Air Force Organization. In the second half of 1985, some units were adjusted, cancelled and merged. By the end of the 20th century, the Lanzhou Military Region Air Force had developed into a combined army consisting of aviation, ground-to-air missile troops, anti-aircraft artillery, radar troops, signal troops and other specialized troops.

The Lanzhou Military Region Air Force insists on the absolute leadership of the Communist Party of China over the army, insists on putting ideological and political construction in the first place, vigorously promotes the spirit of hard struggle, strengthens grassroots construction, and maintains a high degree of stability and centralization of the army. With the development of the national defense industry, weapons and equipment continue to improve, and more advanced aircraft and surface-to-air missiles have been successively equipped with troops. By insisting on taking combat effectiveness as the standard and centering on military training, strict training and strict requirements, the army's combat effectiveness will be raised to a new level.

The Lanzhou Military Region Air Force has long been responsible for air defense operations in the northwest region. The military regions air force agencies and some units have successively performed tasks such as cooperating with ground forces to suppress bandits and nuclear weapons tests, making important contributions to safeguarding the national airspace security and national defense technology. From December 1952 to July 1953, the Air Force of the Military Region organized and commanded the airdrop missions of the transport aircraft units to support the army units in combating bandits in southern Gansu. In May 1956, a successful trial flight was organized at Damxung Airport in Tibet and the Beijing-Xining-Lhasa route was opened. In 1959, he was ordered to unify the leadership and command of the air force participating in the war and cooperate with the People's Liberation Army ground forces to quell the armed rebellion in Tibet. From August 1962 to January 1963, during the border self-defense counterattack operations, tasks such as airlift and airdrop were completed. Beginning in 1963, many troops have been organized to participate in nuclear tests, completing air-dropped nuclear bombs, smoke cloud sampling, explosive dose detection, aerial photography, and other security tasks.

On May 14, 1965, the first airdrop of an atomic bomb by Li Yuanyi of the 36th Division of the Air Force successfully exploded. On June 17, 1967, the 36th Division of the Air Force Xu Kejiang piloted an aircraft for the first airdrop test of a hydrogen bomb. In addition, the Air Force of the Lanzhou Military Region participated in the National Day military parade in the capital, test flight of new aircraft, missile test, homeland aerial survey, rescue and disaster relief, etc., and successfully completed the mission. Participated in more than 80 local key projects. The military and civilians jointly built a railway civilization line of thousands of miles, artificial rain enhancement, aerial seeding afforestation, and fruitful results.

In defending and building the motherland and strengthening army building in the Lanzhou Military Region Air Force, a number of advanced units and heroes and models have emerged. The Air Forces 8th Flight Academy has been flying safely for 25 years and has been awarded the first-class collective merit twice by the Central Military Commission. The honorary titles awarded by the Central Military Commission are: "Model Weather Navigation Station", "Scientific Flight Test Heroes" Hua Jun and Wang Ang, and "Flying Test Heroes" Huang Bingxin. The honorary titles awarded by the Air Force are: "Four Stations on Kunlun Mountain", "Shenwei Brigade", "Sixth Company of Spiritual Civilization Construction", "Heroic Test Flight Brigade", "Lei Feng-style Pilot" Crown Yang, and "Model Conscript" Zhang Jun , "Model Instructor" Wang Quanzhou, "Air Force Model Flight Instructor" Gong Jinqiang, etc.
