T-AOT-1201 Allegiance Tanker
The MSC Tanker Project Office manages all aspects of the ocean transportation of petroleum products to support Defense Energy Supply Center petroleum storage and distribution facilities worldwide. The Tanker Project Office began and ended fiscal year 1999 with seven tankers under long-term contract to move DOD petroleum. Tanker time charters in fiscal year 1999 included MV Allegiance, owned by Maritrans Operating Partners. The charter was in the 3rd of three Options, expiring in December 1999.
In July 1997 Maritrans Inc signed agreements to purchase the remaining marine assets of Sun Transport Inc. in a deal valued at approximately $30 million. Maritrans agreed to acquire six vessels in the transaction. The vessels are: the MT New York Sun which is a 34,000 dwt. petroleum tanker currently on charter to the Military Sealift Command; the MT Philadelphia Sun, the sister ship of the New York Sun, which continued to be employed by Sun Company in its lube oil trade; two tug and barge units, the Puerto Rico Sun/Borinquen Sun and the Seminole Sun/Caribe Sun, which will remain in service to Sun's Puerto Rico operations.
The MT New York Sun was renamed Allegiance and the the MT Philadelphia Sun was renamed Perseverance.
Maritrans Inc. has historically served the petroleum and petroleum product industry by using tugs, barges and oil tankers to provide marine transportation services primarily along the East and Gulf Coasts of the United States. Maritrans builds and operates petroleum transport vessels for the U.S. domestic trade. Maritrans owns and operates a fleet of oil tankers, tugboats, and oceangoing petroleum tank barges. The oil tanker fleet consists of four tankers ranging in capacity from 242,000 barrels to 265,000 barrels. These vessels were constructed between 1975 and 1981. The Company is headquartered in Tampa, Florida and has a Philadelphia office that supports the Northeast crude oil lightering operations. Maritrans' predecessor was founded in the 1850's and incorporated in 1928 under the name Interstate Oil Transport Company.
