SUCCESS 1-1: Commanders and fire support officers (FSOs) from brigade through company understand the importance of integrating fires to support the scheme of maneuver.
- Commanders
and their fire supporters do an excellent job of determining:
- - How fires will be used to support the scheme of maneuver.
- - When fires are critical.
- - Where fires must be placed to support maneuver plans
- - Restrictions for fires to preclude interference with the scheme of maneuver.
- The habitual relationship of fire supporters to their maneuver units is working.
- - fire support coordinators (FSCOORDS) and FSOs have assumed the responsibility for integrating all aspects of mortars into the indirect fire system.
- - FA battalion normally provides survey for mortars.
- - ballistic MET is normally provided to mortars.
- - battalion and company FSOs have assumed the responsibility for:
- - providing mortars with guidance on positioning
- - commander's attack guidance
- - ammunition needed to support combat operations.
- - How fires will be used to support the scheme of maneuver.
RESULT: Mortars have become the weapon of choice to provide immediately responsive fires for maneuver forces.

SUCCESS 1-2: Repeat of Success 1-1.
4QFY95/1QFY96
SUCCESS 1-3: Repeat of Success 1-1.
Enable
maneuver forces to close with and destroy the enemy. Integrate mortars with
field artillery and other fires support assets to echelon fires during objective
preparation.
TA.2 Positive Trend 2: Use of Indirect Fires
Observation frequency: | 4QFY94 | 1-3QFY95 | 4QFY95 / 1QFY96 | 2-3QFY96 |

SUCCESS 2-1: There has been a significant increase in the use of observed Naval Gun Fire and direct support (organic) assets.
RESULT:
- Battle Damage Assessment (BDA) has risen in direct proportion to the amount of fire support used.
- Aircrews have been very effective in using fire support to develop the situation.
- Noted improvement in Accurate adjustment of fires.
4QFY95/1QFY96
SUCCESS 2-2: Units normally arrive with a dedicated rear fire support officer (FSO) and a 24-hour workstation in the Forward Support Battalion (FSB) TOC.
RESULT: Limited, but effective, fires now occur in the brigade rear area.
- Adequately resource the rear fire support element (FSE) with personnel and equipment (e.g.,combat arms lasing teams [COLT] or forward observers [FOs]).
- Make use of non-lethal munitions such as smoke or illumination.
- Integrate indirect fires early into the planning cycle and CSS rehearsals.
- Practice this integration during Home Station Training.
