- Airbus Hands Over First A310 MRTT Air-To-Air Refuelling Aircraft EADS 29 Sep 2004 -- The first two Airbus aircraft with air-to-air refuelling capabilities, A310 Multi-Role Transport Tanker (MRTT) aircraft, were handed over to the German Air Force and the Canadian Air Force, during a ceremony in Dresden, Germany. A total of six A310 MRTTs, to be used both for passenger and cargo transport as well as for in-flight refuelling, are scheduled to be delivered to the German Air Force, which will receive four aircraft, and the Canadian Air Force, which will receive two.
- EADS NORTH AMERICA ANNOUNCES U.S. DEFENSE COMPANY EADS 29 Sep 2004 -- EADS North America has announced the restructuring of its defense business into EADS North America Defense Company. The newly-announced company is a wholly-owned subsidiary of EADS North America, Inc., operating under a Special Security Agreement (SSA) to regulate and ease the management of classified information through a set of institutionalized corporate procedures establishing industrial security and export control measures. James Mulato will serve as CEO and the company will be located in Arlington, Virginia.
- General Dynamics Common Hardware/Software II Contract Reaches $1 Billion Mark General Dynamics 29 Sep 2004 -- General Dynamics C4 Systems, a business unit of General Dynamics (NYSE: GD), has been awarded a $22 million contract modification from the National Guard for ruggedized, secure fax machines, increasing the value of orders executed on the company’s Common Hardware/Software II contract (CHS-2) to more than $1 billion. The CHS-2 contract, awarded in 1995, provides the U.S. Army and other services with access to affordable common hardware and software items while keeping pace with commercial computer advances. The Army Communications Electronics Command is the contracting authority.

- Northrop Grumman Consolidates Operations in Nebraska Northrop Grumman 29 Sep 2004 -- Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC), the largest defense contractor in Nebraska, broke ground today on a new, state-of-the art facility that will consolidate current local operations from four sites to a single headquarters near Offutt Air Force Base. - Pratt & Whitney's F135 Program Completes 1,000th Test Hour Pratt & Whitney 29 Sep 2004 -- Earlier this month the Pratt & Whitney led F135 System Development and Demonstration (SDD) team completed the program’s 1,000th test hour. This testing milestone represents the cumulative hours of F135 SDD Testing and includes both the Conventional Take-Off and Landing (CTOL/CV) engine tests, as well as the Short Take-Off and Vertical Landing (STOVL) system test runs.
- Raytheon and Navy Celebrate Tomahawk Block IV Fleet Introduction Raytheon 29 Sep 2004 -- The U.S. Navy today formally welcomed Raytheon Company's Tomahawk Block IV cruise missile into the Navy's arsenal at a fleet introduction ceremony at the Pentagon. The Block IV officially achieved initial operating capability (IOC) on May 27, 2004, with the loading of the first missile onboard USS Stethem (DDG-63), a guided missile destroyer.

- Sudan: UNHCR Chief Calls For An End To All Violence in Darfur RFE/RL 29 Sep 2004 -- The UN High Commissioner for Refugees says a complete end to violence in Sudan's western region of Darfur is needed to convince hundreds of thousands of displaced people they can eventually return to their homes. Ruud Lubbers said there is enormous mistrust between Darfur's displaced population and Sudanese authorities. Although security has improved in recent months, more than 1.4 million Darfur residents have been displaced and are still afraid to return home amid continuing reports of attacks by Arab militia fighters. A UN Security Council resolution threatens Sudan with possible sanctions if it fails to stop the violence. The UN has called Darfur the world's worst humanitarian crisis. The United States describes it as genocide and accuses Sudan's Islamist government of involvement. But Sudan's foreign minister says the administration in Washington is exaggerating the crisis to gain votes in the upcoming U.S. election.
- SUDAN: Renewed fighting reported in South Darfur IRIN 29 Sep 2004 -- Renewed fighting in South Darfur State has reportedly driven at least 5,000 people from their homes in the last three days, non-governmental organisations operating in the area said on Tuesday. The displaced, they added, were now seeking shelter under trees and waiting without food, water or shelter.

- MAURITANIA: Government says foils third coup plot in 15 months IRIN 29 Sep 2004 -- The Mauritanian government has announced that it has foiled a fresh coup plot and has once more accused Burkina Faso and Libya of supporting disaffected soldiers seeking to overthrow President Maaouiya Ould Taya.
- Nepal-bound plane with U.S. arms in Indian airport IRNA 29 Sep 2004 -- An aircraft operated by Vega Airlines, a private Bulgarian cargo company, carrying explosives and ammunition to "combat" Maoists in Nepal, has been sitting at an Indian airport since Saturday, awaiting permission to fly out to Kathmandu.
- Liberia can't yet fund diamond certification scheme needed to end sanctions - UN UN News Centre 29 Sep 2004 -- Experts monitoring the ban on Liberia's diamond trade say without external funding, the country will not be able to institute a certificate-of-origin regime for trade in the gemstones - a condition considered necessary for the United Nations Security Council to lift the sanctions.
- UGANDA: 21 LRA rebels killed in fresh fighting in the north - army IRIN 29 Sep 2004 -- The Ugandan army said on Wednesday it had killed 21 fighters of the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) in renewed fighting in the north of the country and captured a son of LRA leader Joseph Kony, among others.
