PRECISION ARTILLERY ENGAGEMENT SILENCES INSURGENT MORTAR TEAM

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Multi-National Forces conducted a precision artillery engagement in the Al Thawra District of Baghdad, targeting an insurgent mortar team at approximately 5:15 p.m Sept. 29.

One insurgent vehicle was destroyed, igniting several secondary explosions. The secondary explosions were likely caused by mortar rounds in the vehicle, according to reports from the scene.

"The vehicle was in the perfect area for counter-battery fire'" said Capt. Jason Bullock, a field artillery officer with the 1st Cavalry Division's 1st Brigade Combat Team which operates in eastern Baghdad. "The vehicle was fired on and destroyed in an open area which minimized the risk of collateral damage and civilian casualties."

Insurgent mortar teams have been used often to deliver harassment fire against multi-national forces in eastern Baghdad.

"These teams have been launching mortars at our FOBs [forward operating bases], said Maj. David Clore, a field artillery officer with the 1st BCT. "We have been anxious to ... end their attacks."
