534th Training Squadron [534th TRS]
The mission of the 534th Training Squadron is to train the best space operators to launch, operate, and support Department of Defense and national space systems.
The 534th Training Squadron conducts Initial Qualification Training to operators being assigned to the Air Force's Space Operations Squadrons providing on-orbit command and control of over 50 operational satellites in support of the Department of Defense and the National Command Authorities, under the 50th Space Wing.
The 534th Bombardment Squadron (Heavy) was constituted on 28 October 1942 and activated on 3 November 1942, at Gowen Field, Idaho. It was inactivated on 28 August 1945. It was redesignated the 534th Bombardment Squadron (Very Heavy), allotted to the Organized Reserves and activated on 27 February 1947. It was inactivated on 27 June 1949. It received two Distinguished Unit Citations: Germany, 8 October 1943 and Germany, 11 January 1944.
The squadron was reactivated in December 1985, as the 1013th Combat Crew Training Squadron which centralized, managed, and controlled all combat crew qualification training within Air Force Space Command. In June 1990, the 1013th Combat Crew Training Squadron was split to form two training squadrons, the 1013th Combat Crew Training Squadron and the 1022nd Combat Crew Training Squadron.
The 1022nd Combat Crew Training Squadron was activated to manage and conduct satellite operations crew qualification training for the 2nd Space Wing. Crew members graduating from the 1022nd Combat Crew Training Squadron reported "mission capable" to their operational units within the 2nd Space Wing at Schriever (formerly Falcon) Air Force Base, CO. The squadron's motto, "First in Space Operations Training" emphasized the mission of the new squadron. In January 1992, the squadron was activated as the 50th Crew Training Squadron.
The 50th Crew Training Squadron was activated to manage and conduct Initial Qualification Training for the 50th Space Wing satellite operations crew located at Schriever Air Force Base. Members of all branches of the United States Armed Forces assigned to satellite operations crews attended this Initial Qualification Training. Crew member graduates of the 50th Crew Training Squadron reported to the 1st Space Operations Squadron or 3rd Space Operations Squadron at Schriever Air Force Base. Initial Qualification Training provided the student comprehensive academics in technical vehicle and ground systems and the various tasks, duties and responsibilities of the satellite operations crew member. In addition to satellite operations training, the 50th Crew Training Squadron served as the focal point for instructional technology for Air Force Space Command. The squadron was responsible for training instructors command-wide on basic instructor techniques, scenario development, and training program development. The 50th Crew Training Squadron also served as the development and training policy.
On 1 October 1994, the 50th Crew Training Squadron transitioned to the Air Education and Training Command and was redesignated the 534th Training Squadron.
On 14 April 1995, Air Force Space Command transferred responsibility for knowledge-level Initial Qualification Training for 2nd and 4th Space Operations Squadrons to the 534th Training Squadron. In April 1996, the 534th Training Squadron began the first Initial Qualification Training course for spacelift operators going to the 30th and 45th Space Wings.
