Mobile Inshore Undersea Warfare Unit 103
MIUW Unit 103

MIUW Unit 103 is a commissioned, hardware equipped component of the Navy's Force Protection Package, providing seaward security, surveillance and communication support for commanders operating in littoral areas worldwide.

In Feb 1996 Mobile Inshore Undersea Warfare Unit 103, participated in the multi-national exercise Iron Magic/Iron Siren, in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

MIUWU 103 provided area surveillance of the landing site prior to, during, and after a beach invasion and a live fire training exercise. Participating in the exercise were the UAE's army, navy, air force and coast guard/Frontier Force. U.S. participants included USS Peleliu (LHA 5), USS Anchorage (LSD 36), USS Denver (LPD 9) and USS Rueben James (FFG 57), the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit (Special Operations Capable) and Special Forces. MIUWU 103 personnel traveled to both Bahrain and Abu Dhabi.

The group traveling to Bahrain loaded pre-positioned equipment on board USNS Powhattan (T-ATF 166) for transit to Abu Dhabi where equipment and staff joined up for a seven-hour road convoy to a remote beach landing site. A camp was immediately established and a three section watch provided surveillance of the beach landing area. Gunner's Mate (Guns) 2nd Class Brian Panzer remarked, "Mobilizing halfway around the world with all of our equipment in this scenario is the best training I've had so far in my Naval Reserve career".

At some point following 1996, the unit moved from Treasure Island, CA to its current base in Spokane, WA.
