Aviation Brigade - 38th Infantry Division

As of mid-February 2002, sources seemed to agree that the aviation brigade of the 38th Infantry Division was composed of three battalions. Those same sources seemed, however, to disagree on which battalions made up the unit, in particular which of the 1-137 AVN and the 2-238 AVN was in fact part of the Aviation Brigade of the 38th Infantry Division. In late 1998, the 1-137 AVN was given an additional mission: Augment the 5th Battalion of the 101st Airborne Division.

As of November 2000, the 38th Aviation Brigade had three companies equipped with 15 UH-1 Hueys each. The brigade was also equipped with 12 UH-60A Black Hawks.

Prior to the December 16, 2000 announcement that all the Army National Guard's inventory of AH-1 Cobras were to be permanently retired, the 38th Aviation Brigade's Attack Battalion was equipped with 24 AH-1s while the brigade's cavalry squadron had 18 AH-1. All AH-1s were to be replaced on an interim basis with OH-58 Kiowa helicopters until replacement AH-64D Apache Longobows could be fielded.
