In the late 1980s, there was a lot of talk among the rocketeers about a new mobile complex, which will be in the form of Sovtransavto vans. But, naturally, all this was at the level of rumors, only those who dealt directly with this topic knew the true picture. Here is the most reliable information about this project. These are excerpts from a book published for the 60th anniversary of the Moscow Institute of Heat Engineering. The book is called "On a strategic direction", the publishing house "Intervestnik", Moscow, 2006.

Development began on June 21, 1983 in the Moscow Institute of Technology. The draft project was ready by 1984. According to the mass-dimensional characteristics the complex was close to the complex "Midgetman". On October 6, 1991, the project was terminated, as a result of mutual agreements with the United States to stop the development of mobile light-weight ICBMs - in response, the United States stopped developing the Midgetman.

The reciprocal measure of the Soviet side was the development of a mobile ground complex with a small-sized intercontinental ballistic missile "Courier" (15Zh59), held at the Ministry of Information and Communications under the Resolution of the Central Committee of the CPSU and the Council of Ministers of the USSR of July 21, 1983, No. 696-213. The task was to increase the survival of the SMF group by introducing complexes of increased mobility and secrecy into its composition.

The "Courier" rocket was several times lighter than previously created intercontinental missiles and roughly corresponded to the American missile "Midgetman". In addition, from the side of the aggregates of the ground complex, strict restrictions were imposed on the dimensions of the missile "Courier". Thus, the development of this rocket was an extremely complicated scientific and technical problem.

The initiative to develop the "Courier", a complex with a small-sized intercontinental missile 15Zh59, belonged to the Main RVSN VF. Topolko. HELL. Nadiradze took up its implementation after the consent of the Minister of Defense, D.F. Ustinov. Before that, there was a series of reports, screenings of mock-ups and diagrams to the Chief of the General Staff N.V. Ogarkov. The idea of ??developing the Courier by the Chief of the General Staff was approved.

The complex was, of course, amazing. It fit in the back of a car trailer like "Sovavtotrans", in any railway wagons, could be transported by barges, and even entered the plane. Perhaps, he would not give a clear increase in efficiency. But in the retaliatory strike, of course, could take part, since it was almost impossible to detect this complex.

"Courier" - the world's first and only small-sized solid-propellant rocket of a mobile ground complex on a wheeled track. The launch mass of this intercontinental missile was only about 15 tons - almost 20 times less than the first domestic R-7 ICBM! The length of the Courier was only 11.2 m, and the diameter was 1.36 m. The design of the new generation rocket was based on the latest developments in materials and fuels, as well as a new elemental base in control and guidance systems and a slightly different design concept for ICBMs. According to preliminary estimates of specialists, the "Courier" should not have yielded to its overseas counterpart in terms of its tactical and technical characteristics.

To ensure the intercontinental range of fire for a small missile in its design, the most advanced technical solutions that existed in the world rocket building by the beginning of the 1980s were realized. In particular, the high-density solid fuel of increased energy was used in the march. In the all-assembled hulls of the "cocoon" type and nozzle engines, high-strength and high-modulus composite materials were used. Thin-walled carbon-carbon nozzles were first installed for nozzle apparatuses of the upper stages. The control over the pitch and course channels during the operation of the propulsion engines was carried out by deflecting partially rotated nozzles of increased discharge, which were partially recessed into the chamber.

For the complex, the 15U160 launcher was initially designed on a MAX-7909 (8 8) four-axle chassis, and later on 15U160M on a five-axle chassis MAZ-7929 (10 8).

At the upper stages, the gas dynamical bodies were used to control the rocket, and in the first stage the latticed aerodynamic rudders opened at the start. The latter provided control over all the channels on a ballistic "pause" between the engine sections of the first and second stages. The fighting level of the Courier was equipped with a DM with a high level of mass perfection. Specially for the missile "Courier" the team of NPO AP created a high-precision on-board control system equipment with a mass several times smaller than that of previously developed similar systems.

Given the low load on the midship characteristic of a small missile, it was particularly important to provide minimal aerodynamic resistance, which resulted in well-streamlined outer contours of the rocket. At the same time, the combat equipment was located under the fairing at the end of the work of the second stage, and the third stage control unit was inside the elongated conical connecting compartment of the second stage.
