- IRAQ WRAP VOA 30 Aug 2004 -- Iraq's interim government has been talking with Sunni Muslim and tribal leaders in the western cities of Fallujah and Ramadi in a bid to end insurgencies there. The peace agreement that ended firebrand Shi'ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr's uprising against Iraqi and U.S. forces in Najaf still holds, and Mr. al-Sadr now is calling on supporters elsewhere in Iraq to stop fighting, too.
- Sudan: Darfur Crisis Highlights Struggle Over Genocide, Intervention RFE/RL 30 Aug 2004 -- Ten years after the Rwanda genocide, human rights watchdogs are concerned that history is repeating itself in Sudan. Despite months of reports about atrocities committed against civilians in the western region of Darfur, the UN Security Council has so far been unwilling to authorize an intervention to stop the violence, responsible for the world's worst current humanitarian crisis. This is in part because of a lack of consensus over whether genocide is occurring. Rights experts say international action is needed, regardless of how the situation is defined.

- ING, 24th MEU capture large weapons cache during raid USMC News 30 Aug 2004 -- Marines from the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit, working closely with Iraqi National Guardsmen, conducted a raid in central Iraq Aug. 26, netting a large weapons cache that included dozens of weapons, munitions and explosive making devises.

- IRAQ / CEASEFIRE RFE/RL 30 Aug 2004 -- A radical Iraqi cleric who has led much of the resistance to the U.S. occupation of Iraq has called for a nationwide cease-fire. An aide to Moqtada al-Sadr says the cleric will also join the political process in the coming days.
- Allawi Says He Has Been Meeting With Iraqi Insurgents RFE/RL 30 Aug 2004 -- Iraq's interim Prime Minister Iyad Allawi says he has been holding private meetings with representatives of insurgent groups in an effort to persuade them to accept a government amnesty offer.
- DETAINEE RELEASE BOARD REVIEWS 300 CASES DURING FIRST WEEK CENTCOM 30 Aug 2004 -- The newly formed Combined Review and Release Board considered the detention of 300 security detainees during its first week of deliberation ending Saturday.
