- IRAQ WRAP VOA 12 Jul 2004 -- The Iraqi government has delivered a strong warning to insurgents, threatening to use the same techniques as its opponents to deal with those disrupting the country's security and reconstruction. Correspondent Nick Simeone tells us the tough, new warning came on a day when three more American soldiers were reported killed in insurgent attacks.

- Kearsarge Offloads 24th MEU in Arabian Gulf Navy NewStand 12 Jul 2004 -- USS Kearsarge (LHD 3) began offloading elements of the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) in the Arabian Gulf July 7, reaching the mid-point of its surge mission to the U.S. Central Command Area of Responsibility (AOR). The process took three days.

- U.N./IRAQ ENVOY VOA 12 Jul 2004 -- U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan has named an experienced Pakistani diplomat as U.N. special envoy in Iraq. Kerry Sheridan reports from VOA's New York Bureau, Ambassador Ashraf Jehangir Qazi, currently Pakistan's ambassador in Washington, will take up the U.N. post in Bagdhad at an unspecified future date.
- Senior Pakistani diplomat named new UN envoy to Iraq UN News Centre 12 Jul 2004 -- United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan today named Pakistan's current Ambassador to the United States, Ashraf Jehangir Qazi, as his Special Representative for Iraq.

- IRAQ / EDUCATION VOA 12 Jul 2004 -- Insurgents in Iraq have struck at the heart of the country's higher learning centers, kidnapping noted researchers, university professors, and administrators. Fearing for their personal safety, many educators are leaving the country.
- Iraq: Baghdad Seeks Recognition From Neighbors RFE/RL 12 Jul 2004 -- Barham Salih, the deputy prime minister of Iraq's interim government, says Syria and Iraq will set up a special security force to prevent infiltrations by Islamic militants across their 600-kilometer common border. Salih made the remarks on 11 July during a visit to Damascus -- the first to Syria by an Iraqi official since the United States transferred sovereignty to the interim Iraqi government last month.
- Iraqi President Promises To Punish Insurgents RFE/RL 12 Jul 2004 -- Iraq's interim President Ghazi Ajil al-Yawir promised action today against those threatening Iraq's security.
- IRAQ: Interview with Health Minister Dr Ala'adin Alwan IRIN 12 Jul 2004 -- Iraq's new minister for health, Ala'adin Alwan, is forward-thinking in his ideas about how to modernise health care in the country. Educated in the UK, Alwan previously served as the World Health Organization's (WHO) representative and head of mission in Jordan and Oman. He also served as head of WHO's office on chronic and non-contagious diseases in Geneva.

- IRAQ / EUROPE VOA 12 Jul 2004 -- The European Union says it will try to determine how best it can help Iraq reconstruct its economy and develop democratic institutions there. The vague commitment came after a meeting in Brussels between the 25-member bloc's foreign ministers and their Iraqi counterpart, Hoshyar Zebari, who asked the EU to adopt a higher profile in his country.
