- Rafsanjani condemns assassination of Ayatollah Hakim IRNA 30 Aug 2003 -- Chairman of the Expediency Council Ayatollah Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani on Saturday condemned the assassination of Ayatollah Seyyed Mohammad Baqer Hakim in Iraq and said it showed the ultimate cruelty and the depth of the vengeance the enemies of Islam bear towards Shiite clerics and theological schools.
- Germany strongly condemns the Najaf bombing IRNA 30 Aug 2003 -- The German government strongly condemned the car bomb blast which killed Iraqi Shia leader Ayatollah Mohammad Baqer Hakim and at least 125 others in the holy Shia city of Najaf, DPA reported Saturday.
- Supreme Leader condoles with Iraqi nation over martyrdom of Ayatollah Hakim IRNA 30 Aug 2003 -- Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei issued a message of condolence here Friday on the occasion of martyrdom of Ayatollah Mohammad Baqer Hakim.
- RUSSIA/U-S/IRAQ VOA 30 Aug 2003 -- Russian President Vladimir Putin says his country would support an international force in Iraq under U-S command. But Mr. Putin, speaking in Sardinia where he was the guest of the Italian prime minister, added, however, that such a decision must be taken by the United Nations Security Council.

- IRAQ/NAJAF FUNERALS VOA 30 Aug 2003 -- In Iraq, thousands of mourners have been flocking to the mosques in the holy city of Najaf to begin burying the more than 100 people who died in Friday's car bombing at the Imam Ali Mosque. Several thousand people gathered Saturday at the mosque, one of Shia Islam's holiest shrines, for the funeral of the spiritual leader of one of Iraq's most powerful Shia groups, Ayatollah Mohamed Baqir al-Hakim, who was killed in the blast.
- IRAQ/ARRESTS VOA 30 Aug 2003 -- Four Arab men have been arrested in the Iraqi city of Najaf in connection with Friday's bombing at a Muslim shrine that killed more than 100 people and injured more than 140. Iraqi authorities say the men have close ties with Osama bin Laden's al-Qaida terrorist network.
- Iraq: Thousands Demonstrate Following Al-Najaf Bombing RFE/RL 30 Aug 2003 -- Several thousand people demonstrated today in the streets of Iraq's southern city of Al-Najaf, where a bombing yesterday killed at least 80 people, including Iraq's leading Shi'ite Muslim cleric.
- IRAQ/NAJAF/ROSR VOA 30 Aug 2003 -- Thousands of people are in the Iraqi holy city of Najaf to bury victims of Friday's car bombing, which killed at least 85 people, including Ayatollah Mohammed Baqir al-Hakim, a leading cleric of Iraq's Shi'ite community.
