Rafsanjani condemns assassination of Ayatollah Hakim

Tehran, Aug 30, IRNA -- Chairman of the Expediency Council Ayatollah Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani on Saturday condemned the assassination of Ayatollah Seyyed Mohammad Baqer Hakim in Iraq and said it showed the ultimate cruelty and the depth of the vengeance the enemies of Islam bear towards Shiite clerics and theological schools. In his message, Rafsanjani stressed that the horrible crime proved that the occupiers of Iraq, despite all their propaganda, have failed to establish the minimum security in the country. He further called on Iraqi nation, both Shiites and Sunnis, to develop unity and solidarity among themselves while keeping vigilance in the present sensitive and critical situation in order not to give any opportunity to the internal enemies as well as the occupying forces to stir up insecurity and chaos in the country. He also said in his message that the United Nations was expected to speedily prepare the ground for establishment of a popular system in Iraq to save its people from the occupying forces. The ayatollah further condoled with the Iraqi nation, Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution, theological schools in Najaf and the Hakim Household over the great loss. Judiciary chief Ayatollah Mahmood Hashemi Shahroodi, too, in a message issued on the occasion, expressed his grief over the martyrdom of the late Ayatollah. Also Ayatollah Hossein Nouri Hamedani issued a message on the occasion in which he stressed that occupation of Iraq has come to nothing but destruction and killing. International Assembly to Promote Proximity among Islamic Sects, Secretary for the Council of Guardians, Prosecutor General, Community of Combating Clerics, The Martyrs Foundation, governor generals of various provinces, branches of The Islamic Guards Corps, Friday Prayers leaders and the Office for Islamic Propagation in Qom Theological Schools were among other bodies and organizations to issue similar condolence messages on the occasion. Ayatollah Hakim who was the head of the Supreme Assembly of the Islamic Revolution in Iraq (SAIRI), was killed in a car bomb explosion in the Iraqi city of Najaf when he was returning from Friday prayers yesterday which he himself had led. 1424/211 End
