  • COALITION FORCES TARGET IRAQI COMMUNICATIONS SITES 09 Mar 2003 -- In response to Iraqi hostile actions toward Coalition aircraft monitoring compliance of United Nations Security Council Resolutions, Operation SOUTHERN WATCH Coalition aircraft used precision-guided weapons today to target five unmanned, underground military communication sites. The communication sites were located near An Numinayah, approximately 60 miles southeast of Baghdad. The Coalition struck those targets at approximately 3 p.m. EST.
  • COALITION FORCES DROP LEAFLETS IN SOUTHERN IRAQ 09 Mar 2003 -- Coalition aircraft dropped 180,000 informational leaflets in Iraq earlier today.

  • Powell, Rice Argue For Regime Change in Iraq Washington File 09 Mar 2003 -- Secretary of State Colin Powell said March 9 that there is a "strong chance" that the new U.S.-British-Spanish proposal on Iraqi disarmament before the U.N. Security Council will receive the needed nine votes for passage. The measure, which would set a March 17 deadline for Iraqi compliance with Security Council disarmament demands, is to be voted on in coming days.

If he does not comply, "I think everybody knows what that means: it's time to force compliance through the use of military force," Powell said.

  • FRANCE/IRAQ VOA 09 Mar 2003 -- French Foreign Minister Dominique de Villepin was heading Sunday on a whirlwind trip to Angola, Cameroon and Guinea -- three non-permanent members of the United Nations Security Council. All three are key undecided votes on a possible U-N resolution giving Iraq a March 17 deadline to disarm, or face military action. France is leading the opposition to it.
  • PAKISTAN/IRAQ/PROTEST VOA 09 Mar 2003 -- In Pakistan, tens-of-thousands of protesters gathered in the city of Rawalpindi to show solidarity with the people of Iraq, and protest a possible U-S-led war against Baghdad. The rally was organized by an alliance of six Islamic parties that made a strong showing in parliamentary elections last year. This was the second massive anti-war rally in Pakistan in a week.

  • TURKEY/POL VOA 09 Mar 2003 -- The head of Turkey's ruling Justice and Development Party, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, easily won a parliamentary seat in a by-election in the southeastern province of Siirt Sunday, clearing the way for him to become prime minister. The ruling party took all three seats being contested in Siirt.
