SANDIA NATIONAL LABORATORIES
Kauai Test Facility
Kauai Test Facility (KTF) is a SNL rocket launch range operated in Hawaii for DOE. Sandia's Strategic Target System (STARS) and rail-launched sounding rocket missions launch from KTF. KTF is a tenant on the US Navy Pacific Missile Range Facility (PMRF) at Barking Sands, located on the westernmost extension of the Hawaiian island of Kauai.
KTF has been an active rocket-launching facility since 1962. KTF and the Remote Range Interfaces Department conduct the rocket-launching activities at the KTF. The site is primarily used for testing rocket systems with scientific and technological payloads, advanced development of maneuvering re-entry vehicles, scientific studies of atmospheric and exoatmospheric phenomena, and Missile Defense Agency programs.
KTF includes the Launch Operations Building (LOB), a hardened facility for real-time control of launch operations. It housed the Central Computing Facility (CCF) with workstations and computers. The facilities support a variety of sounding rocket missions, including weapons research and development; operational training, test, and evaluation; and technology development.
