Combustion Research Facility

Metal Hydride Center of Excellence

    The Metal Hydride Center of Excellence (MHCoE) is one of three DOE centers of excellence dedicated to solving the problem of storing hydrogen on automobiles. The MHCoE is comprised of eight universities (Stanford, Caltech, U. Pittsburgh, Carnegie-Mellon U., U. of Utah, U. Hawaii, U. Nevada-Reno, and U. of Illinois), six national laboratories (Sandia National Laboratory, Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Brookhaven National Laboratory, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Savannah River National Laboratory, and National Institute of Standards and Technology) and three companies (HRL Laboratories, General Electric, and Intematix). R&D five project areas include Destabilized Metal Hydrides, Complex Anionic Materials, Amides/Imides, Alanes, and Engineering Design and Analysis.

Joint BioEnergy Institute

    The Joint BioEnergy Institute (JBEI) is scientific partnership led by Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) and including the Sandia National Laboratories (Sandia), the University of California (UC) campuses of Berkeley and Davis, the Carnegie Institution for Science and the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL). JBEI is one of three DOE Bioenergy Research Centers. It is located in EmeryStation East, a laboratory building in Emeryville, California. JBEI's primary scientific mission is to advance develop biofuels and its research focus is on the efficient conversion of lignocellulosic biomass.

Microstructures Laboratory

    The Microstructures Laboratory, part of Sandia's Microfluidics Department, is a multi discipline user clean room facility created to apply semiconductor-microfabrication processing technology to research.

Computer Sciences and Information Technologies Center

    The Computer Sciences and Information Technologies (CS & IT) Center has two research facilities: the Distributed Information Systems Lab and the Interactive Design Center. The CS & IT Center mission is to develop technologies for high-performance computing across the nuclear-weapons complex and to provide modeling, simulation, and visualization capabilities in for the analysis and design of nuclear weapons in real time. Its work is supported by the NNSA's Advanced Simulation and Computing (ASC) program. It also performs other projects supporting other federal agencies and DOE offices, such as the Scientific Discovery through Advanced Computing program. Activities include computational science and mathematics research, high performance computing, visualization systems research and development, problem solving environments, information security research and operations, desktop computer support, videoconferencing solutions and desktop collaboration technologies, and network operations.

  • Distributed Information Systems Lab
    • The Distributed Information Systems Lab (DISL) develops technologies for enabling collaborative, high-performance computational work across the nuclear weapons complex. DISL conducts research on high performance computing, visualization, distributed systems, collaborative technologies, and information security. It is a 71,500 square-foot facility that includes infrastructure for local and distance interaction with people and data.

     

  • Interactive Design Center
    • The Interactive Design Center(IDC) is located in the DISL. It is a visualization environment that allows the evaluation and modification of nuclear weapons designs in real-time. It is funded by DOE/NNSA's Advanced Simulation and Computing Program, It work benefits simulation-based stockpile stewardship.

Physical and Engineering Sciences Center

    The Physical and Engineering Sciences Center work in engineered materials, micro/nanosciences, and computational modeling and simulation of materials and processes. Its research and development supports systems engineering for nuclear weapon stewardship, energy and environmental challenges, homeland security needs, and technological business development.
