Waste Facilities
Liquid Low-Level Waste System
The Liquid Low-Level Waste System processed large quantities of liquid waste containing of hazardous and low level radioactive byproducts. Transfer of the end product for disposal is also part of this project. By 1997, 10 LLLW tanks had been removed from service and were inactive.
Transuranic Waste Facility
The Transuranic (TRU) Waste Processing Center (TWPC), formerly the TRU/Alpha Low Level Waste Treatment Project, is managed by EnergX for DOE ORO Environmental Management Program. It handles legacy TRU wastes and future wastes that will be generated from decontamination and decommissioning, remediation, and ongoing operations at ORNL. The facility processes, treats, repackages and ships the waste for final disposal at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant, Nevada Test Site. It also processes low-level and low-level mixed wastes generated as a byproduct of TRU.
