LAWRENCE LIVERMORE NATIONAL LABORATORY

Institutes

LLNL jointly manages several scientific institutions through its University Relations Program (URP), which is menat to foster collaboration between the Laboratory and academic institutions, notably the University of California.

Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics

The Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics (IGPP) promotes basic research of the structure, origin, and evolution of the solar system and planets. It is a branch of the multi-campus University of California IGPP. It is divided into two centers, the LLNL Astrophysics Research Center and the IGPP-LLNL Center for Geosciences. The latter focuses on research on geochemistry, experimental petrology, mineral physics, and hydrology

Institute for Laser Science and Application

The Institute for Laser Science and Application (ILSA), which was created in 1996, is used for training and research in laser-interaction-with-matter science and advanced laser technologies. Its research focuses on high-intensity/high-energy laser applications, HED science topics such as ICF, interaction physics, laser-plasma interactions in laser-driven plasmas, laser-irradiated matter, and advanced plasma diagnostics. Jupiter, the IGPP and ILSA are administratively managed by the Physical Sciences Directorate of LLNL.

Institute for Scientific Computing Research

The Institute for Scientific Computing Research (ISCR), established in 1986, sponsors research, administratively hosts programs for faculty and students, organizes technical workshops, and coordinates collaboration. It fosters collaboration between academia and LLNL in scientific computing, computer science and computational mathematics. It is jointly administered by the LLNL URP and the Computing Applications and Research Department (CAR). The ISCR administers the university part of the ASC Institute for Terascale Simulation (ITS).

Center for Global Security Research

The Center for Global Security Research supports independent, multidisciplinary research in both policy and technology in defense, arms control, nonproliferation, and peacekeeping. It brings scientists and technologists together with analysis to integrate technology and policy by exploring the ways technology can enhance security.

Glenn T. Seaborg Institute

The Glenn T. Seaborg Institute (GTSI), founded in 1991, is the CMELS education center
