A number of claims and counterclaims are being made on the Ukraine-Russia conflict on the ground and online. While GlobalSecurity.org takes utmost care to accurately report this news story, we cannot independently verify the authenticity of all statements, photos and videos.

On 24 February 2022, Ukraine was suddenly and deliberately attacked by land, naval and air forces of Russia, igniting the largest European war since the Great Patriotic War. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a "special military operation" (SVO - spetsialnaya voennaya operatsiya) in Ukraine in response to the appeal of the leaders of the "Donbass republics" for help. That attack is a blatant violation of the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine. Putin stressed that Moscow's goal is the demilitarization and denazification of the country. The military buildup in preceeding months makes it obvious that the unprovoked and dastardly Russian attack was deliberately planned long in advance. During the intervening time, the Russian government had deliberately sought to deceive the world by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.

The UK Ministry of Defence reported that as tensions remain high in the Black Sea, skirmishes have taken place between maritime and air forces around strategically important gas and oil platforms between Crimea and Odesa. Last week, a Russian combat jet shot at a Ukrainian military small boat operating near a platform in the north-west of the sea.

The platforms are operated by the Chernomorneftegaz company, which was seized by the pro-Russian occupation authorities in Crimea during the 2014 annexation. Since Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022, Ukraine has struck several Russian-controlled platforms. Both Russia and Ukraine have also periodically occupied them with troops.

The platforms command valuable hydrocarbon resources. However, like Snake Island to the west, they can also be used as forward deployment bases, helicopter landing sites, and to position long-range missile systems.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that at night, the Russian opponent struck another blow with winged missiles of air base. As a result of successful combat operations by the forces and means of the Air Forces of Ukraine, 4 winged missiles were destroyed.

During the day, Russian forces launched 11 missiles and 32 air strikes, carrying out 38 fire from reactive fire systems at the positions of Ukrainian troops and settlements. As a result of Russian terrorist attacks, unfortunately, there are deaths and injured among the civilian population. Residential buildings, schools and other civilian infrastructure were destroyed.

The probability of missile and air strikes throughout Ukraine remains high.

During the day, there were 23 combat clashes.

In the Volyn and Polish directions there is an operational environment without significant changes.
In the Siversky and Slobozhansky directions, Russian forces struck an air strike in the area of Kindrativka of Sumy region. Carried out mortar and artillery shelling over 25 settlements, namely, Hrinivka, Klyusi, Liskiv region of Chernihiv region; Middle-Buda, Free Freedom, Simeykinne, Wolfine, Kindrativka, Sadki of Sumy region and Okip, Strilecha, Oliynikove, Gatyshche, Nesterne of Kharkiv region.
In the Kupians Наkomu direction, Russian forces struck aerial strikes in the areas of Hope, Tverdohlíbovogo and Mâsožarívki of Luhans 'k region. Russian artillery and mortar shelling suffered the settlements of Kamanka, Synkivka, Ivanivka, Kislivka, Berestove Kharkiv region.
In the Lyman direction, Russian forces led unsuccessful offensive actions in the area of Novoêgorívka Luhansk region. Artillery shelling of the Russian opponent suffered by more than 10 settlements, namely, Karmazinivka, Nevske, Chervonopopivka, Kreminna, Kuzmine of Luhansk region and Torsk, Dibrova, Spirne of Donetsk region.

In the Avdiivsk direction, Keramik, Novokalinovo, Avdiivka, Karlivka, Pervomaysk, Nevelsk, Donetsk region fell under Russian artillery and mortar shelling.
In the Marjinsky direction, the defense forces continue to suppress the advance of Russian troops in the area of Marjinka Donetsk region. of the opponent.struck an air strike in the area of Krasnogorívka Donetsk region. Artillery shelling suffered populations in Alexandropil, Gostre, Maryinka, Pobeda, Paraskoviyivka, Vodyane Donetsk region.

In the Kherson direction, Russian forces inflicted air strikes in the areas of Mykolaivka, Mykylsky and Antonivka of Kherson region. More than 10 settlements were affected by artillery shelling of the Russian forces: Zmíivka, Tomaryne, Burgunka, Tyaginka, Kherson, Bílozerka and others.

At the same time, the Defense Forces of Ukraine continue to conduct an offensive operation in the Melitopol direction, strengthen on the reached borders, carry out counterbattery resistance measures.

During the day, the Defense Forces air carried out 10 strikes on the focus areas of personnel and 1 on the Russian forces' zenith missile complexes.

Units of missile troops and artillery during the day hit 1 ammunition warehouse, 2 radio stations and 3 artillery ammunition in the Russian opponent's firing positions.

The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation reported that the previous night, the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation launched a strike with long-range airborne high-precision weapons against an airfield near Pinchuky (Kiev region). The objective of the strike has been achieved. All the assigned targets have been engaged.

In Kupyansk direction, the Zapad Group of Forces, supported by aviation, artillery fire, and heavy flamethrowers, repelled 11 attacks by assault detachments of the 43rd, 44th, 115th mechanised and 68th Jaeger brigades of the Ukrainian Armed Forces during the day in the areas of Sinkovka (Kharkov region), and Novosyolovskoye and Novoegorovka (Lugansk People's Republic).

The enemy's losses in Kupyansk direction amounted to up to 120 Ukrainian servicemen killed and wounded, one tank, three armoured fighting vehicles, three motor vehicles, as well as a U.S.-made M777 artillery system.

In Zaporozhye direction, units of the Russian grouping of forces, using the results of air strikes and artillery fire, successfully repelled five attacks by assault groups of the 116th Mechanised, 82nd Air Assault, and 46th Airmobile brigades of the AFU of Rabotino and Uspenovka (Zaporozhye region).

Over the day in Zaporozhye direction, up to 200 Ukrainian servicemen, three armoured fighting vehicles, four vehicles, two US-made M777 artillery systems, German-made Panzerhaubitze 2000 and Polish-made Krab self-propelled artillery systems, a D-20 howitzer, and a U.S.-made M119 gun were neutralised.

In Donetsk direction, two enemy attacks were repelled close to Pervomaiskoye and Nevelskoye (Donetsk People's Republic) by concerted action of the Yug Group of Forces in co-operation with aviation, artillery, and heavy flamethrowers.

The enemy's losses in Donetsk direction amounted to up to 240 Ukrainian servicemen killed and wounded, three armoured fighting vehicles, five pick-up trucks, a Grad MLRS combat vehicle, a U.S.-made M777 artillery system, and two D-30 howitzers.

In Krasny Liman direction, units of the Tsentr Group of Forces, air strikes, and artillery fire repelled three attacks by assault groups of the 42nd Mechanised Brigade of the AFU near Chervonaya Dibrova (Lugansk People's Republic).

During the day, the enemy's losses in Krasny Liman direction amounted to more than 80 Ukrainian troops, two armoured fighting vehicles, two pick-up trucks, and two Gvozdika self-propelled artillery units.

In South Donetsk direction, units of the Vostok Group of Forces, air strikes, artillery fire, and heavy flamethrowers inflicted fire damage on clusters of AFU manpower and hardware in the areas of Novodonetskoye (Donetsk People's Republic) and Priyutnoye (Zaporozhye region).

The enemy's losses amounted to up to 130 Ukrainian servicemen, two armoured fighting vehicles, three motor vehicles, as well as D-20, Msta-B, and D-30 howitzers.

In Kherson direction, Russian units eliminated up to 15 Ukrainian servicemen, five motor vehicles, a U.S.-made M777 artillery system, and a D-30 howitzer as a result of a complex fire attack.

Operational-Tactical Aviation, Missile Troops and Artillery of the Russian Armed Forces' grouping of troops (forces) engaged manpower and military hardware of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in 144 areas.

In addition, a P-37 radar station used for detecting air targets, guiding fighter aircraft, and targeting anti-aircraft missile systems was destroyed near the city of Zaporozhye.

An ammunition depot of the 47th Mechanised Brigade of the AFU has been destroyed near Slavgorod (Dnepropetrovsk region).

The Russian fighter aviation shot down a Mi-8 helicopter of the Ukrainian Air Force near Zalivnoye (Zaporozhye region).

Air defence forces shot down two Su-25 aircraft of the Ukrainian Air Force close to Malaya Tokmachka and Novodanilovka (Zaporozhye region). Nine HIMARS multiple rocket launchers were intercepted during the day.

In addition, 30 Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles were shot down close to Nikolayevka, Privolye, and Topolevka (Lugansk People's Republic), Lozovoye, Ivanovka, Semigorie, and Podgornoye (Donetsk People's Republic), Novoye, Chapayevka, Tokmak, and Skelevatoye (Zaporozhye region) and Vasilievka (Kherson region).

In total, 466 airplanes and 247 helicopters, 6,152 unmanned aerial vehicles, 433 air defence missile systems, 11,527 tanks and other armoured combat vehicles, 1,145 combat vehicles equipped with MRLS, 6,079 field artillery cannons and mortars, as well as 12,463 units of special military equipment have been destroyed during the special military operation.
