A number of claims and counterclaims are being made on the Ukraine-Russia conflict on the ground and online. While GlobalSecurity.org takes utmost care to accurately report this news story, we cannot independently verify the authenticity of all statements, photos and videos.
On 24 February 2022, Ukraine was suddenly and deliberately attacked by land, naval and air forces of Russia, igniting the largest European war since the Great Patriotic War. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a "special military operation" (SVO - spetsialnaya voennaya operatsiya) in Ukraine in response to the appeal of the leaders of the "Donbass republics" for help. That attack is a blatant violation of the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine. Putin stressed that Moscow's goal is the demilitarization and denazification of the country. The military buildup in preceeding months makes it obvious that the unprovoked and dastardly Russian attack was deliberately planned long in advance. During the intervening time, the Russian government had deliberately sought to deceive the world by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.
"To initiate a war of aggression... is not only an international crime; it is the supreme international crime differing only from other war crimes in that it contains within itself the accumulated evil of the whole." [Judgment of the International Military Tribunal]
The UK Ministry of Defence reported that amidst a highly complex operational picture, heavy fighting continues along multiple sectors of the front. In most areas Ukraine holds the initiative.
Russian forces are likely still being ordered to return to the offensive as soon as possible: Chechen units have led an unsuccessful attempt to take the town of Marivka, near Donetsk city, where the front line has changed little since 2015.
Through 07 June 2023, flood levels continued to rise in the lower Dnipro, following the collapse of the Kakhovka Dam, but will likely start to recede during 08 June 2023. Shelling has complicated some attempts to evacuate displaced civilians from inundated areas.
The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that during the day of June 8, Russian forces launched 1x missile, 27x air strikes, around 30x MLRS attacks at the positions of Ukrainian troops and various settlements.
The likelihood of missile and air strikes across Ukraine remains very high.
Russia focuses its main efforts on Lyman, Bakhmut, Avdiivka, and Mar'inka axes, heavy fighting for every square meter of land is ongoing. During the day of June 8, 26x combat engagements took place in the above-mentioned areas of the frontline.
Volyn and Polissya axes: no significant changes. No signs of the formation of Russian offensive groups were found. Certain units of the Russian Armed Forces continue their deployment at the training grounds of the Republic of Belarus.
Sivershchyna and Slobozhanshchyna axes: Russia maintains its military presence in the areas of Russia bordering Ukraine. Russia reinforces its group engaged in border protection with units of territorial troops. During the day of June 8, Russian forces launched air strikes on the settlements of Myropillya, Sinne, and Severynivka (Sumy oblast). The Russian invaders fired mortars and artillery at the settlements of Atyns'ke, Bezsalivka, Myropillya, Ponomarenky (Sumy oblast), Krasne, Morokhovets', Luk'yantsi, Starytsya, Hatyshche, Vovchans'k, and Chuhunivka (Kharkiv oblast).
Kup'yans'k axis: the Russian adversary fired artillery and mortars at Kam'yanka, Krasne Pershe, Novomlyns'k, Dvorichna, Kyslivka, Tabaivka, Berestove (Kharkiv oblast), and Novoselivs'ke (Luhansk oblast).
Lyman axis: during the day of June 8, the Russian adversary conducted unsuccessful offensives in the vicinity of Vesele (Donetsk oblast). Makiivka, Nevs'ke, Bilohorivka (Luhansk oblast), Verkhn'okam'yans'ke, Tors'ke, Spirne, and Rozdolivka (Donetsk oblast) were shelled with artillery.

The Russian adversary launched an air strike in the vicinity of settlement of Bila Hora (Donetsk region). Vasyukivka, Min'kivka, Orikhovo-Vasylivka, Hryhorivka, Bohdanivka, Ivanivske, Stupochky, Oleksandro-Shul'tyne, Bila Hora, Druzhba, Toretsk, and Pivnichne (Donetsk oblast) came under Russian artillery fire.
Avdiivka axis: the Russian adversary made unsuccessful attempts to advance near the settlements of Sjeverne and Opytne. Russian forces launched air strikes in the vicinity of Avdiivka. The Russian occupant forces fired artillery at the vicinities of settlements of Novokalynove, Avdiivka, Tonen'ke, Pervomais'ke, and Karlivka (Donetsk oblast).
Mar'inka axis: Ukrainian defenders repelled all Russian attacks in the vicinity of the city of Mar'inka. Russian forces suffered losses. At the same time, Russian forces fired artillery in the vicinities of Mar'inka, Pobjeda, and Novomykhailivka (Donetsk oblast).

In the settlements of the temporarily occupied territory of Kherson oblast, the Russian occupiers continue to leverage the aftermath of their crime. In particular, evacuees from the flooded settlements are being accommodated in boarding houses and recreation centers where military units are already deployed. This is the invaders' attempt to protect themselves by hiding behind civilians.
According to the available information, the Russian military leadership has significant problems with the supply of materiel for its troops. Soldiers who have recently signed contracts in military units stationed in Volgograd (Russia) have been issued boots instead of high ankle boots. In addition, contract service soldiers are being forced to buy uniforms at their own expense.
During the day of June 8, Ukrainian Air Force launched 18x air strikes at the concentrations of troops and 2x - at the anti-aircraft missile system of the Russian adversary.
During the day of June 8, the Ukrainian missile and artillery troops hit 5x command posts, 6x concentrations of troops, weapons, and military equipment, 2x anti-aircraft missile systems, 8x artillery units at firing positions and 2x other important Russian targets.
