On 24 February 2022, Ukraine was suddenly and deliberately attacked by land, naval and air forces of Russia, igniting the largest European war since the Great Patriotic War. Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a "special military operation" (SVO - spetsialnaya voennaya operatsiya) in Ukraine in response to the appeal of the leaders of the "Donbass republics" for help. That attack is a blatant violation of the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine. Putin stressed that Moscow's goal is the demilitarization and denazification of the country. The military buildup in preceeding months makes it obvious that the unprovoked and dastardly Russian attack was deliberately planned long in advance. During the intervening time, the Russian government had deliberately sought to deceive the world by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.
"To initiate a war of aggression... is not only an international crime; it is the supreme international crime differing only from other war crimes in that it contains within itself the accumulated evil of the whole." [Judgment of the International Military Tribunal]
"Ukraine is not a bridge, not a pillow between the West and Russia, not a buffer between Europe and Asia, not a sphere of influence, not a "gray" zone, not a transit territory. Not the border between orcs and elves. Ukraine is a future equal partner for at least 27 EU countries" said President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. "120 days ago, Russia launched a full-scale war against us. For 120 days, Ukraine and its people have heroically been defending their land and their freedom. They are fighting back one of the largest armies in the world. The aggressor, whose population is three times larger than ours, and the area is almost 30 times bigger. Therefore, each of the 120 days of our struggle is historic."
By making absurd accusations of Nazism against the Ukrainian leadership, Russia is cultivating far-right nationalism as an instrument of war, said US Ambassador to the OSCE Michael Carpenter . According to him, Russia uses the word "Nazi" as "a code word to denote anyone who opposes Russia's barbaric war against Ukraine." Addressing a meeting of the OSCE Permanent Council on Russian aggression in Ukraine, he said "Atrocities do not occur naturally or spontaneously. The utter contempt of such a large number of Russian soldiers for the elderly, women and children in Ukraine is a direct result of the fact that troops are fueling lies about Ukraine and its people, and instilling ultranationalist and dehumanizing ideas among its troops. Such an ideology has long been propagated inside Russia and embodied by home-grown far-right extremist groups, "said the American diplomat. According to him, it is necessary to "clearly speak about who supports them and for what purpose."
One hundred and twenty-second days of the heroic opposition of the Ukrainian nation to the Russian military invasion continue. The personnel of the Russians are demoralized, the promised "huge" payments for participation in hostilities by the command of the Russian occupation forces under various pretexts are not carried out. The occupiers continue to suffer heavy losses in battles with the Ukrainian Defense Forces.
Ukraine officials said troops in Severodonetsk have been ordered to withdraw as there is very little left to defend in the bombed-out eastern city, where hundreds of civilians remain trapped in the Azot chemical plant. Severodonetsk Mayor Striuk has said civilians had started to evacuate the Azot chemical plant, where several hundred people had been hiding from Russian shelling. “These people have spent almost three months of their lives in basements, shelters. That’s tough emotionally and physically,” he noted, adding they would now need medical and psychological support.
Severodonetsk’s twin city of Lysychansk is set to become the next main focus of fighting. Pro-Russian leader says it would take another week and a half to secure full control of Lysychansk. South of Severodonetsk, Ukrainian soldiers have retreated from the towns of Hirske and Zolote in the face of overwhelming Russian forces, said Oleksiy Arestovych, an adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Deputy Minister of Defense of Ukraine Hanna Malyar stated that the Ukrainian military was unable to "complete the planned" in Severodonetsk due to the premature publication of information on social networks. "Why can't it be said publicly that the Armed Forces left… or entered… the settlement before the General Staff announced it. Because it harms the work of the Armed Forces. It takes away precious time - a day / two, which they could still implement their military plans and maneuvers in the face of the secrecy of the military operation, "she wrote on Facebook.
"The public demonstration of civilians' awareness of the course of military operations and the announcement of this on social networks to the official statements of the General Staff partially disrupt military operations - as it was yesterday and the day before yesterday in Severodonetsk. When they simply did not allow the Armed Forces to complete what was planned, "she added.
The UK prime minister has said he feared Ukraine could face pressure to agree to a peace deal with Russia that was not in its interests, due to the economic consequences of the war in Europe. “Too many countries are saying this is a European war that is unnecessary … and so the pressure will grow to encourage – coerce, maybe – the Ukrainians to a bad peace,” Johnson told broadcasters in the Rwandan capital, Kigali, where he was attending a Commonwealth summit. He said the consequences of Russian President Vladimir Putin being able to get his way in Ukraine would be dangerous to international security and “a long-term economic disaster”.
The UK Ministry of Defence reported that Ukraine is likely re-configuring its defence of the Sieverodonetsk-Lysychansk sector, as Russian armoured units continue to make creeping gains on the southern edge of the build up area. Since the start of June, the Russian high command has highly likely removed several Generals from key operational command roles in the war in Ukraine. These include the commander of Airborne Forces (VDV) General-Colonel Andrei Serdyukov; and commander Southern Group of Forces (SGF) General of the Army Alexandr Dvornikov. Dvornikov was also for a time probably acting as over-all operational commander. Command of the SGF is likely to transfer to Colonel-General Sergei Surovikin, as SGF continues to perform a central part in Russia’s offensive in the Donbas. For over thirty years, Surovikin’s career has been dogged with allegations of corruption and brutality.
Spokesman for the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Oleksandr Shtupun reported that in the Volyn and Polissya areas, units of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Belarus, on a rotating basis, perform tasks to cover the Belarusian-Ukrainian border in Brest and Gomel regions. The threat of missile and air strikes from the territory of this country remains.

Ukrainian intelligence calls the recent mass shelling of Ukraine by the Russian occupiers a large-scale provocation. This is the first case of an air strike on Ukraine directly from the territory of Belarus. According to spies, in this way Russia wants to further involve Belarus in the war against Ukraine. This was reported by the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine.
"The demoralized Russian army is looking for ways to justify its return home. (...) They do not dig trenches, but depressions up to half a meter, they lie on their backs, stick out their legs and wait for minor injuries" - claims the Ukrainian operational command South. In his opinion, the soldiers are trying to get out of the Kherson Oblast in this way, incl. because they are scared of losses among their commanders and in their own ranks.
