A number of claims and counterclaims are being made on the Ukraine-Russia conflict on the ground and online. While GlobalSecurity.org takes utmost care to accurately report this news story, we cannot independently verify the authenticity of all statements, photos and videos.

On 24 February 2022, Ukraine was suddenly and deliberately attacked by land, naval and air forces of Russia, igniting the largest European war since the Great Patriotic War. The military buildup in preceeding months makes it obvious that the unprovoked and dastardly Russian attack was deliberately planned long in advance. During the intervening time, the Russian government had deliberately sought to deceive the world by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.

"To initiate a war of aggression... is not only an international crime; it is the supreme international crime differing only from other war crimes in that it contains within itself the accumulated evil of the whole." [Judgment of the International Military Tribunal]

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a "special military operation" in Ukraine in response to the appeal of the leaders of the "Donbass republics" for help. That attack is a blatant violation of the territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence of Ukraine. Putin stressed that Moscow's goal is the demilitarization and denazification of the country.

The sixty-fifth day of the opposition of the Ukrainian people to the Russian military invasion continue.Russia’s “special military operation” in Ukraine is aimed at protecting the two self-proclaimed Russian-backed republics of Donetsk and Luhansk, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said in an interview with Al Arabiya.

“The goal of our operation, it was announced openly, is to protect these two republics and to make sure that no threat will ever emanate from the Ukrainian territory to the security of these people and to security of the Russian Federation,” Lavrov said. He claimed that Russia has been aiming to protect the two republics because “they have been under attacks from the Ukrainian regime for a long, long eight years. When the coup happened in 2014, they said they don’t want to have anything to do with these people who came to power illegally and they said, ‘leave us alone, we want to understand what is going on,’ they never attacked the rest of Ukraine.”

“Unfortunately, NATO, it seems, considers itself to be at war with Russia. NATO and European Union leaders, many of them, in England, in the United States, Poland, France, Germany and of course European Union chief diplomat Josep Borrell, they bluntly, publicly and consistently say, ‘Putin must fail, Russia must be defeated.’ When you use this terminology, I believe you think that you are at war with the person who you want to be defeated.”

He added that Russia knows the routes being used to supply Ukraine with arms, stating that “as soon as these weapons are reaching Ukrainian territory, they are fair game for our special operation.”

The UK Ministry of Defence reported the Battle of Donbas remains Russia’s main strategic focus, in order to achieve its stated aim of securing control over the Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts. In these oblasts fighting has been particularly heavy around Lysychansk and Severodonetsk, with an attempted advance south from Izium towards Slovyansk. Due to strong Ukrainian resistance, Russian territorial gains have been limited and achieved at significant cost to Russian forces.

Institute for the Study of War reported that "Russian forces likely intend to leave a minimal force in Mariupol necessary to block Ukrainian positions in Azovstal and prevent partisan actions and are deploying as much combat power as possible to support offensive operations elsewhere. Ukrainian forces are successfully slowing Russian attacks in eastern Ukraine, which secured only minor advances west of Severodonetsk and did not advance on the Izyum front in the last 24 hours. Ukrainian counterattacks in Kharkiv are unlikely to develop into a major counteroffensive in the coming days but may force Russia to redeploy forces intended for the Izyum axis to hold their defensive positions around the city. Ukrainian intelligence continued to warn that Russian false flag attacks in Transnistria are intended to draw Transnistria into the war in some capacity and coerce Moldova to abandon pro-European policies."

A senior Pentagon official said that fighting in eastern Ukraine may drag on for some time as both Russian and Ukrainian forces are familiar with the terrain and using long-range fire. The official said that Russia is trying to press the Ukrainians from the north, south and east, and troops who had been deployed in the southeastern city of Mariupol are moving north. The US Defense Department official also said Russian troops are moving south from Izyum in the Kharkiv region but facing fierce resistance from Ukrainians.

Spokesman for the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Oleksandr Shtupun reported the full-scale armed aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine continues. The Russians continued to conduct offensive operations in the Eastern Operational Zone in order to establish full control over the territory of Donetsk and Luhansk regions and maintain the land corridor with the temporarily occupied Crimea.

In the Volyn and Polissya areas, certain units of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Belarus continue to carry out tasks to strengthen the section of the Ukrainian-Belarusian border in the Brest and Gomel regions. An inspection of the readiness of the aviation component of the regular forces and means of the air defense system of the Republic of Belarus was noted. The threat of missile and bomb strikes on the objects of the Ukrainian State from the territory of the Republic of Belarus remains.

In the Seversky direction, the Russians, by keeping the appropriate set of troops, are trying to prevent the movement of reserves of the Armed Forces of Ukraine from the Seversky direction to the Eastern Operational Zone. In the areas of the Bryansk and Kursk regions bordering Ukraine, the Russians deployed part of the units deployed to restore combat capability.

In the future, it is possible that the Russians will demonstrate and provoke in the areas adjacent to the state border of Ukraine. In the Izium direction, the Russians are operating with units of the 1st Tank Army, the 20th Combined Arms Army of the Western Military District, the 35th Combined Arms Army, the 68th Army Corps of the Eastern Military District and the Airborne Troops. The Russians's main efforts are focused on conducting reconnaissance and inflicting fire damage on units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. To ensure additional transfer of troops in the Izyum direction, the Russians provide additional pontoon-bridge crossings across the Seversky Donets River.

In the Donetsk and Tavriya directions, Russians units were trying to launch an offensive in the Lyman, Severodonetsk, and Popasnyansk directions. The Russians continued to try to establish full control over the settlements of Rubizhne and Popasna and carries out preparatory measures for the advance to Severodonetsk. In order to clarify the position of the units of the Defense Forces of Ukraine, the Russians conducted air reconnaissance using the Orlan-10 UAV. He continues to lose this reconnaissance equipment.

In the South Buz and Bessarabian directions, the Russians is trying to fight with the available forces in order to improve its tactical position. Continues to regroup, increases the system of fire damage, improves the engineering equipment of positions. As part of the increase in the system of logistics of the troops, the Russians deployed assembly points for damaged vehicles and points for repair and restoration of equipment.

In the Transnistrian region of the Republic of Moldova, the Russian Federation continued to disseminate information through pro-Kremlin media about the threat to the population of the region from Ukraine. In particular, there are reports of another case of Ukrainian UAVs being used over ammunition depots.

Russia has said it used a diesel submarine in the Black Sea to strike Ukrainian military targets with Kalibr cruise missiles, the first time Moscow has announced the use of its submarine fleet to hit its neighbor.

Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, invading Russian forces have launched over 1,300 missiles worth at least $7.5 billion, Forbes Ukraine reported. In particular, the invaders launched 235 Kalibr missiles. In total, 62% launches were carried out with the use of Iskander missiles, 30% with X-101 missiles, and 8% with Tochka-U missiles. According to Forbes, the cost of a Tochka-U is estimated at $300,000, while the cost of a Kalibr is $6.5 million, according to the terms of a Russian export contract with India in 2006. At the same time, X-101 missiles are more modern and may be much more expensive than Kalibr.

A Russian missile strike on Odesa airport has damaged the runway and it can no longer be used, according to the Ukrainian military.
