Russo-Ukraine War - 2014
Anti-Terrorist Operation
August 2014 - Week 4 - 24-31 August - Russian Invasion
Since early 24 August 2014, when the rest of the country celebrated Independence Day, the Ukrainian soldiers also started seeing Russian regular army and military vehicles on Ukraine's territory. They were no longer hiding. Russia notified Ukraine that it planned to send another "humanitarian convoy" to the Donbas using the previous route. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said this at a briefing in Moscow 25 August 2014. "Russia has notified Ukraine of its intention to send another humanitarian convoy using the same route in the next few days," Lavrov said.
Ukrainian officials said Russian tanks and armored vehicles crossed into southeastern Ukraine 25 August 2014, bearing flags of pro-Russian separatists. Azov battalion deputy commander Ihor Mosiychuk reported an invasion of a large number of tanks, Grad multiple rocket launchers and howitzers through the Ukrainian-Russian border. "A full-scale invasion! This information has been fully confirmed by border guards and volunteers. Near the settlements of Marchenko and Shcherbak, not far from Novoazovsk, about 30 tanks with sketched Russian labels and under the symbols of the so-called DPR broke through the Ukrainian-Russian border. This convoy of armored vehicles is moving toward Telmanove and Amvrosiyivka".
The convoy of Russian military vehicles tried to make a breakthrough from Russia into Ukraine near Novoazovsk, where it met the resistance of Ukrainian troops. The coordinator of the Information Resistance group, Dmytro Tymchuk, reported "Due to the rapid actions of Ukrainian units, the convoy was divided. The major part of the convoy was stopped with the fire of our forces". Tymchuk also said that part of the convoy (about ten armored personnel carriers, two tanks and two KamAZ trucks) had continued to move deeper into Ukraine.
In connection with the delays in execution of numerous orders of the Prime Minister of Ukraine, on Tuesday, 26 August 2014, an urgent meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine was summoned to adopt the following decisions:
- to hand over weapons and military equipment from the warehouses of the Defence Ministry to cover the needs of the army, the National Guard and armed forces personnel who participate in anti-terrorist operations, immediately - within 48 hours after submission of an application by ATO commanders;
- to hold immediate repair and upgrading, without additional approvals and permits, of all military equipment of 3-4 categories, which belongs to the Ministry of Defence and is stored in the production facilities of the state-owned concern "Ukroboronprom";
- the Defence Ministry and the National Guard must immediately purchase all the military equipment, which is manufactured by "Ukroboronprom" and stored in the company’s warehouses, and immediately deliver it to the war zone.
A senior NATO official told reporters 28 August 2014 the organization had assessed that "well over 1,000 Russian troops are now operating inside Ukraine. ... They are supporting separatists [and] fighting with them," he said, speaking on condition of anonymity. NATO released satellite images that it said show Russian combat forces engaged in military operatins in Ukraine. The alliance said the images, captured recently, depict Russian artillery units moving in a convoy and then establishing firing positions near the southeastern town of Krasnodon. Former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko accused Moscow of starting a war against Kyiv. "The Russian army invaded Ukrainian territory last night,” she said. "… We cannot call what is going on in the east of the country a terrorist act of unknown separatists. We must say honestly that Russia started a war against Ukraine."
The United Nations said 29 August 2014 that nearly 2,600 people have been killed since fighting broke out in mid-April. That did not include the 298 people killed when a Malaysian airliner was shot down July 17 above the war-torn area. Fighting has intensified in August, with roughly three dozen people killed daily in eastern Ukraine, according to the U.N.'s assistant secretary general for human rights.
Ukrainian military officials said an Su-25 fighter jet was shot down 29 August 2014 by a Russian missile during fighting between Ukrainian forces and pro-Russian separatists in the eastern part of the country. The pilot managed to eject safely. There was no indication of precisely where the incident took place.
“Thank God, I think no one is thinking of unleashing a large-scale conflict with Russia,” a defiant Putin said in a fiery speech at a youth summer camp. “I want to remind you that Russia is one of the leading nuclear powers,” he told the children. “Russia’s partners,” he added, “should understand it’s best not to mess with us.” Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov said “There have been reports about satellite imagery exposing Russian troop movements... They turned out to be images from video games. The latest accusations happen to be much the same quality.”
EU leaders meeting in Brussels announced 31 August 2014 that they had asked the European Commission for a list to be prepared within a week of new measures to take against Russia if it failed to reverse course in Ukraine. But the EU is deeply divided on the severity of possible actions, as many of the 28 members of the European bloc are dependent upon Russian gas and trade. A joint statement by the EU leaders demanded Russia "immediately withdraw all its military assets and forces from Ukraine." Despite overwhelming evidence, Russia denies it has such forces in Ukraine.
