Army Corps 4, a main body of the Vietnam People's Army, was established on 20.07.1974. The Commander and Political Commissar of the first 4 were Hoang Cam and Hoang The Thien. The 4 Corps Commander now has deputy commanders, the Commissioner, Deputy Political Commissar; authorities in charge of the side advisory work, politics, logistics, engineering and other affiliated entities.

The 4 Corps under the Ministry of Defense of Vietnam , also known as the Army of the Mekong, is one of four corps of the Vietnam People's Army units Hero of People's Armed Forces (20th awarded in 1979). The Corps was founded July 20, 1974 in Duong Minh Chau, War Zone, domain Southeast . Previously known as "351 Command" Southern force. Headquarters Command: Song Than Industrial Park, the town of Di An, province of Binh Duong.

Executive Resolution No. 21 of the Plenum of the Party Central Committee on strengthening the military toward unification, May 10/1973 Central Military Commission and the Ministry of Defense, proposed to establish the Politburo corps mainstay of Vietnam People's Army, in the South Central and South Pole. From early 1974 the Central Bureau, Military Commission and the Ministry of Regional Command directed plan staffing organization, drafting functions of a major army on the battlefield. After the plan went through the payroll organization, dated 20/07/1974, Mr. Pham Hung, Politburo member, Secretary of the Central Bureau officially announced the decision to establish 4 Corps in the war zone.

With all functions are powerful punch, and maneuver forces on the battlefield, 4 Corps mission was to destroy the enemy, liberate the people, as the core of the armed forces, as solid support for the political forces struggle of the masses, to take on a strategic direction in the battlefield area, with the ultimate goal of the liberation of Saigon.

Once established, based on the two-year strategic plan 1975-1976 and the immediate task of fighting during the dry season 1974-1975, Military Commission, Southern Command tasked the Army to launch a campaign in Phuoc Long, aimed at destroying a part of the enemy, clearing a distance; then if they defeat the enemy counter-attack, sustain liberated areas. By typing flexible, ingenious creativity and courage triumphed Corps campaign Line 14 - Phuoc Long, in collaboration with Campaign Campaign Highlands and Hue - Da Nang under the operational strategic plan. The Corps cleared large geographical areas, gathered force and open the important directions for advancing forces to entered Saigon.

This is a significant victory as a strategic reconnaissance to help Politburo decision making accurate determination of full liberation of South Vietnam were reunified the country in 1975.

On 02/4/1975, at the base of Vinh An, Lieutenant General Tran Van Tra, Deputy Commander Operation Command Saigon Liberation Army, was tasked to deploy 4 Corps on two Strategic directions to Saigon - South East and West. Obeying the orders of the commander of the Campaign, and to facilitate strategies for the Saigon Liberation Campaign, the motto "Fight to win, the sure", dated 09/4/1975 was adopted. Army forces captured first line of defense shooting attack enemy Xuan Loc. After many fierce attacks, on 04/21/1975, the Corps smashed the Xuan Loc defensive line, freeing the town of Xuan Loc and Long Khanh Province whole.

The team fought hard and with flexible tactices, the tip of the Corps turned to invade Trang Bom, defenses Ho Nai, Bien Hoa area of enemy defenses, eventually advancing to the inner city of Saigon. Along with other military forces, this ended the Ho Chi Minh campaign.

In 1975 the Corps, outside of military duty in Saigon, was involved in protecting the southwest border of the country, as well international duty helping the people of Cambodia escape from genocide of Pol Pot's regime. At the same time, the corps also helped build, training the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Cambodia to build and strengthen the new government, reinforce and further tighten solidarity traditional friendship between the two peoples of Vietnam and Cambodia as brothers. The Corps fought to protect the southwest border and international missions in Cambodia (1977-1979).

Today, in the building of national defense and socialist Vietnam, 4 Corps is focused training, improving the overall quality and level of combat readiness, ensuring sufficient Corps ability to complete the task of immediate and long-term. To build the Corps, the Party comprehensively ensures good logistics, engineering, caring for soldiers living and active construction of the local political base. The corps is a maneuver formation, and all of the forces stationed in the south of the country, promote the traditional "Loyalty, solidarity, brave, creative, self-reliance, determination to win ".
