CODAI - Organization
CODAI (Comando de Defensa Aeroespacial Integral), in addition to the Logistics Brigade, included five Air Defense brigades (19th, 29th, 39th, 49th and 59th), plus a sixth scheduled (69th), deployed throughout the national territory. The air defense brigades are deployed in the territory corresponding to each of the strategic areas of integral defense of the CEOFAN. The air defense brigades are commanded, almost entirely, by army generals, while missile air defence groups are in charge of army personnel, the Navy (Buk M-2) and the Air Force. The upper command of the CODAI is mainly in charge of Air Force officers;
CODAI has seven monitoring and control groups [Grupo de Vigilancia y Control]: West surveillance and control group, Los Llanos Monitoring and control group, central surveillance and control group, Oriente surveillance and control group, Guyana monitoring and control group, and, tactical surveillance and Monitoring Team. These units are equipped with search and detection systems such as, among others, the long-range mobile radars Cetec Jly-11 3d and JY-1b, manufactured in China. In April 2014, the supply of 26 radars and eleven command and control systems of unspecified models was contracted with China.
In April 2016 the Integrated Aerospace Defense Command (CODAI Comando de Defensa Aeroespacial Integral), under the Strategic Operational Command of the National Armed Forces (CEOFANB - Comando Estratégico Operacional de la Fuerza Armada Nacional), created new units and restructuring several existing ones. This followed a resolution of the Ministry of Popular Power for Defense [Ministerio del Poder Popular para la Defensa].
The 394 Missile Defense Group was transformed into the 293 Missile Defense Group and transferred from the 39th Air Defense Brigade of the Strategic Integral Central Defense Region (Redi Central) to the 29th Air Defense Brigade of the Los Llanos Redi. The 239 Anti-Air Defense Missile Group is a strategic unit named for Supreme Commander Lieutenant Colonel Hugo Chávez Frías, equipped with the long-range Russian S-300VM Antey-2500 mobile missile system.
The 290th Anti-Air Defense Missile Technical Group, assigned to the 29th Air Defense Brigade, was created and activated, with the following organizational structure: Command; Headquarters of Plana Mayor; Floor Plan; Control Battery and Services; Maintenance Station Battery, Check and Test; Equipment and Mounting Battery, and, Supply Battery.
The 29th and 39th Air Defense Brigades were also reorganized. The 29th Brigade has a Command; A Staff; A Second Command and Chief of Staff; A Regional Command and Control Tactical Center, and with the following united tactics: 290 Technical Group Missile Defense Antiaircraft; 296 Anti-Air Defense Missile Group, 292 Anti-Air Defense Missile Group, 293 Anti-Air Defense Missile Group, 296 Anti-Air Defense Artillery Group (ZU-23 / ZOM1-4), 297 Portable Air Defense Missile Group, and 297 Group Missile Defense.
The 39th Brigade, whose organizational structure at the Command and Staff levels is similar to the 29th Brigade, now had the following tactical units: 390 Missile Defense Technical Missile Group; 391, 392 and 393 missile defense groups; 396 Artillery Group of Anti-aircraft Defense, and, 397, 398 and 399 Portable Air Defense missile groups.
The Anti-aircraft Defense groups are equipped with portable Igla-S and Saab Bofors RBS-70 missile systems; S-125 Pechora, short range, BUK M-2, medium range, and S-300VM Antey-2500, long range. Meanwhile, the Anti-aircraft Defense Artillery groups are equipped with ZU-23 / ZOM1-4 towed double-barreled anti-aircraft guns.
CODAI's Logistics Support Group was transformed into a Logistics Brigade, made up of a Command Battery and five logistic support groups: West, Los Llanos, Central, Oriente and Guayana. In turn, each group of Logistical Support is made up of one Command, one Headquarters of Major Plana, one Main Plana and five squads of Support: Weapons. Radar, Communications, and, Supply.
