Bofors L70
Lithuania strengthened Ukraine’s air defense with L70 anti-aircraft systems. The President of Lithuania Gitanas Nauseda said that the guns with ammunition would arrive soon. The provision of military assistance to Ukraine will be continued with the help of Lithuanian defense industry enterprises. Lithuania will also continue its financial contributions to international initiatives for the purchase of weapons for Ukraine.
The Bofors L60 is a 40 mm automatic anti-aircraft gun developed in 1929-1932 by the Swedish company Bofors. It was widely used during the Second World War, both in land and ship versions, and was in service with many countries of the world. The Bofors L60 is often referred to simply as "Bofors". Its further development was the Bofors L70 gun.
The L70 40-mm autocannon was developed by Bofors in the post-war period and entered service with the Swedish army in 1951. It was widely supplied abroad and was produced under license in six different NATO countries. An electro-hydraulic drive is used for guidance, but if necessary, the gun can be guided manually.
Bofors L70 short-range automatic anti-aircraft guns and ammunition for them, which Lithuania will provide to Ukraine as part of a new military aid package, are very effective systems for destroying Iranian Shahed kamikaze drones.
The Bofors L70 is a widely recognized anti-aircraft system, like the Swiss Oerlikon, which is installed on the ZSU (anti-aircraft artillery self-propelled installation - ed.) Gepard. These are two competing guns that are still in service and are actively used, in particular, installed on ships . For your understanding, Bofors L70 anti-aircraft systems are installed on Swedish CV90 BMPs, which are probably considered to be one of the best in the world.
The L70s have an automated system with a centralized radar post that guides these anti-aircraft guns. A person is needed there only to charge these systems. And now we are also talking about installing modern thermal imaging devices and optical sighting stations that allow working at any time of the day and ensure high accuracy. At the same time, less than one round will be required to destroy such targets as Shahed, because the installation has a very powerful 40 mm caliber.
The provision of military support to Ukraine will be continued with the help of Lithuanian defense industry enterprises, as well as financial contributions to international initiatives and funds for the purchase of weapons for Ukraine. For these purposes, the budget of the Ministry of National Defense of the country has already provided 40 million euros.
"The determination of the Lithuanian people to support Ukraine is unprecedented. 95% of the country's population is in favor of humanitarian aid, 70% of them have donated money and goods for Ukraine. In 2022, the Lithuanian state provided assistance to Ukraine in the amount of €660 million, including €240 million in the form of military aid. Lithuania will continue this assistance until victory," Nauseda stressed.
