Orao 2.0
"Orao 2.0" [Eagle] is the name given to the upgraded J-22, unofficially accepted as the official designation does not currently exist. "Orao 2.0" will be a multi-purpose aircraft, with air policing as its special role. This is a proposal for modernization in which it is possible to analyze many variables, and that only after these analyzes, as well as discussions with the Air Force, would it be possible to define the direction to go. A completed tedesign would yield better aerodynamics and less parts/complexity for same results with possible yielding 10% more aerodynamic airframe. If all of these were applied to J-22, it could reach and break mach one speed with J-22 reaching up to mach 1.4 with afterburning.
The presentation of the proposed fighter modernization "Eagle" during the opening 16 April 2016 of a new hangar at the military airport "Batajnica" was met with quite a storm in professional circles and among the interested public. This two-seat version of the NJ-22 tracking number 25507, had undergone relatively large modification to become a demonstrator of the possible fleet modernization program. This copy was not an airplane that had flown very long - at least 15 if not more years it was parked at the airport at Batajnica as a repair reserve. Built in November 1988, the life expectancy had expired in 2012, and extending it to expire in 2017.
In October 2012, certain media and journalists after visiting high-Serbian state delegation to the United Arab Emirates conveyed the information that the Arabs discussed joint projects among which there is a supersonic training aircraft that would be offered to foreign buyers, including the UAE. Subsequently, this project was determined to be a transonic version of Orao, from which to train pilots crossing to fighters. All the time, of course, it remained only on paper.
Is it possible to modernize the technically and technologically obsolete J-22 aircraft; whether it is profitable to do so and whether the aircraft has promise are different question. Most of the comments about this project were extremely negative, but also based on very limited information. Statements made at the event organized primarily for general media and promotion before the elections can not be used to illustrate and explain the plan closer, intent and desired segments of the development of the demonstrator.
Of the weapons on the aircraft on the inner pylons were domestic laser guided bomb LVB-250F, which had long been in development, while the external pylons were first seen hanging air-to-ground guided missiles . On the right wing were rockets with the tag VRVZ-240 EK-16 which is a modification of the Soviet unguided rockets S-24 caliber 240 mm on the left wing of the rocket previously unknown label that bears an uncanny resemblance to the programmed target missile PRM-200. Another new element on the plane were carriers of arms at the ends of the wings which housed the Soviet / Russian infrared homing air-to-air missiles R-60MK. On podtrupnom carrier was a Vinten scout container which is standard on Scouts IJ-22.
