Orders and Medals of the New Russia
From May 2019, the Russian military will be able to place only ten state orders, medals or other departmental heraldic signs on the two bars on the left side of the jacket, Izvestiya writes, citing sources in the Russian military. Such a restriction is valid only for participants in the parade on Red Square, but the Ministry of Defense intended to extend it to all Russian military personnel. The department planned to introduce changes to the order on “Rules for wearing military uniforms, insignia, departmental insignia and other heraldic signs in the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation” this month. The amendments will prohibit the wearing of civilian awards and insignia of social organizations on the dress military uniform.
The wearing of various kinds of orders issued by public organizations during solemn events often caused criticism from the public. In particular, the opinion is expressed that such actions discredit military service. In addition, there were currently several public organizations in Russia that arbitrarily distribute rewards to citizens, similar to real military orders.
The owner of the maximum number of state military awards is Igor Rodobolsky, Colonel of the Aerospace Force of Russia. This is stated in the Book of Records of the Armed Forces of Russia, posted on the website of the Ministry of Defense. According to the Book of Records, Rodobolsky took part in the hostilities in Afghanistan, and also served during the armed conflict in the Chechen Republic and in the territories adjacent to Russia in 1994-1996. He also participated in counter-terrorism operations in the North Caucasus region in 1999. In 2003, Rodobolsky was awarded the title Hero of the Russian Federation for the courage and heroism that he showed in the performance of combat missions in the Caucasus.
Russian President Vladimir Putin decided to establish a new state award - a medal "For Courage" of two degrees. The corresponding decree of the head of state was published on 23 March 2023 on the official Internet portal of legal information. The "Medal "For Courage" is awarded to citizens of the Russian Federation for bravery and courage shown in the course of combat and other operations to protect the Fatherland and the state interests of the Russian Federation, as well as to maintain or restore international peace and security. The medal "For Courage" can be foreign citizens and stateless persons were awarded," the regulations on the medal, approved by the decree, say. The regulation establishes that the medal can be awarded posthumously. In the list of Russian medals, the new award will be the third - after the medal of the Order "For Merit to the Fatherland" and the medal "For Courage". The medal is set to be worn on the left side of the chest. According to the description, the medal will be made of silver (while the medal of the 1st degree is gilded), round in shape with a diameter of 32 mm.
