The Russian Aircraft Corporation (RAC) "MiG" has resumed work on the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) "Skat" ["Stingray"], in the design of which the technology "stealth" will be used. The project of a heavy reconnaissance and strike UAV "Skat" is being implemented by the OKB Mikoyan and Gurevich (RAC "MiG") and engine-building enterprise of JSC "Klimov". In the RAC "MiG" TASS said that for several years they are working on the creation of drones of various types and dimensions, but they did not confirm the information concerning specific developments, referring to the data closeness.

The development of the UAV "Skat", according to open sources, began in the RAC "MiG" in an initiative in 2005. The model of the UAV was demonstrated in August 2007 at the MAKS airshow. On the demonstration sample, MiG specialists placed tactical guided air-to-surface missiles of medium-range X-31P and corrected bombs KAB-500Kr. The declared maximum mass of the combat load was 2 tons. "Scat" is equipped with an airplane-type chassis, and a "flying wing" should reduce the visibility of the apparatus for radar detection.

"Skat" is a multifunctional jet unmanned vehicle, made according to the aerodynamic scheme "flying wing" [does not have a tail unit]. The length of the airframe is 10 meters, the wing span is 11.5 meters. It was planned that the maximum take-off mass of the device would be 10 tons, the maximum speed is 800-850 km/h, the range of flight is 4,000 km, the practical ceiling is 12,000 kilometers. The UAV was supposed to carry both missile and bomb weapons in the interior of the cabin.

The body of the aircraft in the plan is a triangle with an angle of sweep along the leading edges of about 54. The same sweep is made with zero-tapering wing consoles with cuts at 90 to the front and rear edges of the tips. In general, in the whole appearance of the Scat on the top and bottom views, there is a tendency to build all the external contours of the glider, the joints of the panels, the doors of the niches and manholes along just a few parallel axes, which meets the requirements for reducing radar visibility. The basic aerodynamic control organs of the device are multifunctional deflectable surfaces along the trailing edge of the wing consoles, with the help of which the control is carried out both in roll, pitch and course, and aerodynamic braking. Additional control surfaces are also available on the ventral parts of the center wing, with a backward sweep at the trailing edge (the same approximately 54, but with the minus sign). Skat is designed to make up for the lack of heavy strategic vehicles in the unmanned aircraft of the Russian Federation that could barrage in the air for several days, transmit reconnaissance data and strike strikes on the enemy.

Inside UAV housing is the lateral air passage of the engine and most of the power plant. It is equipped with two compartments payload length of 4.4 m and a cross section 0,65h0,75 m, inside each of which may reside on one rocket "air-surface" or " air-radar ", or on an adjustable bomb of caliber 250-500 kg. During the presentation, "Skat" was demonstrated with X-31P anti-radar missiles and KAB-500Kr corrected bombs. The maximum weight of the combat load of the device is 2000 kg.

The chassis of the device is a traditional aircraft design, ensuring its take-off and landing at conventional airfields. The chassis is made in a three-support scheme, retractable. There is one wheel per rack. The front support with the lever rack is retracted by flight into the compartment of the housing under the air channel of the engine, the main ones, also with the arms, in the axis of the aircraft in the niche of the center wing.

Power plant is one turbojet engine RD-5000B thrust of 5040 kgf, which is a modification of the turbofan RD-93 (variant used in MiG-29, RD-33 single-engine foreign warplanes) and can be combined to reduce the visibility of the flat nozzle. At the first stage of the Scatha tests, the engine can be equipped with a traditional axisymmetric nozzle (both versions were presented). The frontal, uncontrolled air intake of the engine is located at the top of the nose of the apparatus.

There is a confusion regarding many details of the design of the device. The absence of a tail unit on a UAV implies the presence of an electronic flight control system, unlike conventional UAVs, where remote control of the device is possible. The development of the system of automatic electronic control is a significant problem for Russia with its limited capabilities to develop its own software.

The appearance of a class of heavy UAVs in the Russian army will significantly strengthen its reconnaissance and technological capabilities at the tactical and operational levels. In addition, the troops will be able to obtain valuable intelligence information, adjust fire and strike without threatening the lives of servicemen.

However, on this path domestic designers will have to solve a number of complex problems related to the development of suitable engines, on-board equipment and artificial intelligence. In the armed forces of the Russian Federation, there are a sufficient number of foreign components.

The enthusiasm of the public did not influence the position of the Ministry of Defense, and in 2012 the project was frozen because of a lack of interest on the part of the military department. How to explain the behavior of officials with Frunzenskaya embankment? Had the military "stabbed" a promising project? Or did it became a victim of interpersonal intrigues and unfair competition, as it often happens? The loss of interest in this project roughly coincided with the departure of Anatoly Serdyukov as Minister of Defense, at which time many project begun under his tenure fell out of favor.

An analysis of the characteristics of "Scat" suggested that the Defense Ministry was guided by sound considerations. The company "MiG" began working on the drones in an initiative (that is, aware of the risk of failure of the project). the most likely reason for the Ministry of Defense's unsatisfactory conclusion was that the combat load of the MiG brainchild is significantly inferior to all airborne platforms in service. Against this backdrop, investing in a 20-ton "Hunter" looks much more promising.

In addition, the company did not have the necessary competencies to create a full-fledged heavy drones. The traditional specialization of MiG is the development and production of light front-line fighters. But it is possible that the Defense Ministry eventually decided to support the corporation with new orders. Since 2000, RSK MiG was in a very difficult situation due to the lack of the army's need for new light fighters.
