The MiG-35 is a further development of MiG-29K/KUB fighters, which Russia will supply for the Indian aircraft carrier Vikramaditya (formerly Admiral Gorshkov). Indian experts helped integrate foreign computers into the MiG-29KUB's avionics, took part in developing aircraft simulators and also chose its weaponry. The MiG-35 has a better combat performance and improved flying characteristics. For example, its onboard radioelectronic equipment includes a fifth-generation information sighting system.

In August 2005 the MiG-35 prototype, the MiG-29-M/OVT, was displayed at the MAKS-2005 aerospace show in the town of Zhukovsky near Moscow. In January 2007, the "MiG-35" was rolled out for the first time and it was prominently featured during the MAKS-2007 show in August 2007. Though the aircraft displayed had "MiG-35" painted on the side, it was evidently the two-seat MiG-29-M/OVT prototype.

The MIG Corporation proposed the MiG-29M single-seat and the MiG-29M2 twin-seat aircraft for the Indian Air Force's procurement order for 126 fighters. Mig-29M/M2 could be assembled locally by HAL if the Indian government finally selects this aircraft. "It will be for the (United Arab) Emirates, and other version - with improved performance - and will be presented to the Ministry of Defense of Russia", - said Tarasenko. Earlier, the head of the state corporation "Rostec" Sergei Chemezov said Russia and the UAE have started to work on creation of a joint light fighter of the fifth generation on the basis of the MiG-29 in 2018.

In 2015, in the RAC "MiG" stated that the company continues to work on a light fighter of the fifth generation, in spite of the absence of the order. It has been reported that the platform of the aircraft may be of the MiG-35. In this case, the United Aircraft Corporation stated that the creation of a light fighter is not a priority for the company. At the same time Ilya Tarasenko said that the customers of the major parties of the latest MiG-35 could be India, Kazakhstan, Peru and other countries. "We are ready to provide our customers with the planned transition to the MiG-29, MiG-35. We are now working very hard to promote this aircraft. Among the major buyers I would call India, Kazakhstan. It is also Myanmar, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Peru, Algeria" - he listed.

According to the head of Rosoboronexport Aleksandra Miheeva, interest in purchasing the aircraft includes Bangladesh - "our long-standing partner, which operates Russian equipment mainly." Bangladesh earlier placed an order for 16 combat training aircraft Yak-130 under a contract signed in 2014. The Corporation "MiG" believe that customers of large batches of aircraft can also become India, Kazakhstan and the countries of South and South-East Asia and the Middle East.

According to military analyst Victor Litovkin, speaking to TASS 23 June 2017, in the MiG-35 has enough good prospects to win foreign aviation market, especially where it is necessary to replace old aircraft. This aircraft can be baought by, for example, Brazil, Peru and the countries of Southeast Asia. It can not be ruled Egypt and Algeria, even India, which requires replacement of the old Soviet MiG-21 and MiG-23. If a country does not fear of US pressure and sanctions, which the United States is actively used in the competition, they will choose the MiG-35. The expert stressed that the advantage of our MiG - in the ratio of price and quality, as well as its tactical and technical characteristics, which are not inferior to the French nor the Rafale or the American F-18 or the European Eurofighter Typhoon.

As part of the life cycle of the MiG-35 is 30-40% cheaper to operate than their foreign counterparts. In addition, one aircraft will cost about 20% cheaper than its competitors. However, some countries in Southeast Asia are already in their battle of the various modifications of the Russian fighters "Su" - Su-30MK2, Su-30MKM and Su-30MK.
