FAB-500S-E
FAB 500-M62. High Explosive Bomb FAB 500 M62 is intended for destruction of military-industrial sites, railway junctions, field facilities, personnel in open terrain as well as in light armoured vehicles and trucks on the march or during attack within the main concentration perimeter. FAB-500 and FAB-1500 performed best during a special military operation, especially during the liberation of Avdievka in the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR). Now the designers are modernizing them, increasing their power.
On 15 January 2024, ex-Colonel of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) Oleg Starikov said that Ukrainian air defense systems are not able to shoot down a single Russian glide bomb. He noted that Russia has tens of thousands of FAB-500, FAB-250, FAB-1500 and FAB-5000 units. He also pointed out the unique feature of Russian glide bombs, which allow them to attack the enemy without entering the range of their air defense. According to him, this weapon is very serious. At the end of January, retired Ukrainian general Sergei Krivonos said that the Russian army was undermining the positions of the Ukrainian Armed Forces near the Dnieper with high-explosive FAB-500 aerial bombs. He added that Ukrainian military personnel have to constantly restore shelters destroyed by Russian strikes.
On 03 March 2024, German journalist Julian Repke, in a report for the Bild newspaper, reported that Russian troops were effectively destroying the positions of the Ukrainian Armed Forces with high-explosive FAB-500 aerial bombs.“The crater could be several meters deep. After such a bomb hits the position of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, nothing remains of the position. This is a big advantage,” said Repke. According to the journalist, the key to the success of Russian forces is their air supremacy together with various types of ground weapons.
Russian Defense Minister General of the Army Sergei Shoigu visited enterprises of the military-industrial complex (DIC) in the Nizhny Novgorod region to check the progress of the state defense order. During the visit on 21 March 2024, the head of the department was informed that “The production of FAB-500 aerial bombs has been increased many times, the production of FAB-1500 has been doubled, and since February of this year, mass production of FAB-3000 has been organized,” the department reported.
