45th Air Force and Air Defense Army

The 45th Air Force and Air Defense Army, which includes the 1st and 3rd Air Defense Divisions, as well as the 98th Separate Guards Combined Aviation Regiment stationed in Monchegorsk, are covering the air from naval and ground forces. Parts of the army are located not only on the mainland, but also on the Novaya Zemlya, Severnaya Zemlya and Franz Josef Land archipelagos.

Now the 45th army is actively rearming. Last year, the fleet of radio-technical troops was significantly updated. This year, it is planned to re-equip one of the units with S-400 systems. The army will receive 40N6 long-range anti-aircraft missiles - they are designed to destroy cruise missiles, aircraft and maneuvering warheads at a distance of up to 400 km. One of the army regiments received the “Shell-S” complex, which should cover the long-range air defense systems S-300 and S-400, as well as important military and administrative facilities.

The 45th Army of the Air Force and Air Defense with headquarters in Severomorsk was transferred to the subordination of OSK Sever. It includes the 98th mixed air regiment (Monchegorsk, Murmansk region, about 30 Su-24M bombers and Su-24MR reconnaissance aircraft, 14 MiG-31BM interceptors, 8 Mi-24 attack helicopters), air commandant’s at Rogachevo (Novaya Zemlya), Nagurskoye airfields ( Franz Josef Land), Middle (Severnaya Zemlya), Temp (Novosibirsk Islands), 1st Air Defense Division. The latter includes the 331st (Severomorsk) and 332th (Arkhangelsk) radio regiments, as well as 4 anti-aircraft missile regiments: 531st (Polyarny), 583rd (Olenegorsk, Murmansk region), 1528th ( Severodvinsk), 33rd (Rogachevo, Novaya Zemlya). These regiments have a total of at least three S-400 anti-aircraft missile systems (SAM) divisions and at least six S-300PS / PM air defense divisions.

In the Air Force of the USSR, the 45th Air Army existed from 1949 to 1957 in Transbaikalia. Subsequently, it was called the Air Force of the Trans-Baikal Military District and the 23rd Air Army. In 1998, the army was disbanded, and its units and formations were transferred to the 14th Air Force and Air Defense Army (Novosibirsk), later relocated to Yekaterinburg (now the 2nd Air Force and Air Defense Command).

The territorial control center of the army of the Air Force and Air Defense of the Northern Fleet began combat duty in the Arctic. The press service of the fleet reported 25 July 2018. "Today in the administration of the army of the air force and air defense of the Northern Fleet a ceremonial ritual of the territorial center's command was held for combat alert for anti-aircraft defense," the press service said.

This was the next stage in the work on the deployment of military infrastructure in the Arctic and makes it possible to significantly expand the possibilities to ensure the protection of Russia's national interests. Among the tasks entrusted to the territorial command center of the air force and air defense army is airspace control in the Arctic zone, as well as the protection of the state border of Russia in the airspace within the borders of the responsibility of the Northern Fleet.

The 45th Army of the Air Force and Air Defense of the Northern Fleet was formed in December 2015 to strengthen the air control system in the Arctic. As part of the new unit, the military units of the radio-technical troops and the anti-aircraft missile regiment, equipped with the upgraded S-300 Favorit complexes on the Franz Josef Land Archipelagos, Novaya Zemlya, Severnaya Zemlya, and the Novosibirsk Islands, joined forces on air defense duty.

The Office of the Press Service and Information of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation on January 29, 2016 reported that a regular meeting of the Collegium of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation was held in Moscow under the leadership of the head of the Russian military department, Army General Sergei Shoigu.

Turning to the formation of units and military units of the Northern Fleet in the Arctic and the creation of a supporting infrastructure, the Defense Minister recalled that this work is carried out within the framework of the implementation of the presidential decrees of the year 2012 and its instructions following the meetings in Sochi, as well as during the implementation of the approved in 2014, the new Military Doctrine, in which the Armed Forces set a task to ensure national interests in the Arctic zone.

As for the aerospace defense of the region, the difficulty here is that the density of the radar network is extremely low, and the anti-aircraft means cover only a few bases of the fleet. The traditional means of air defense of the Arctic are the interceptors MiG-31 with a powerful radar detection complex "Zaslon" and long-range missiles "air-to-air" - a kind of flying SAM.

However, it is already impossible to provide aerospace defense of the North on the MiG-31 alone, especially in the conditions of the fast equipping of neighbors in the arctic "communal" with hypersonic cruise missiles. Therefore, the patching of the radar field and the deployment of new aerospace defense weapons will be one of the most important priorities in strengthening the Russian military presence in the Arctic.

According to the head of the military department, the construction of military facilities on the archipelagos of Franz Josef Land, Novaya Zemlya, Severnaya Zemlya and the Novosibirsk Islands is actively carried out for these purposes, the necessary conditions for the life of the servicemen are created. "Thus, on the islands of Kotelny and Alexandra Land, the construction of unique administrative and residential complexes is completed, designed for year-round service by military units. An extensive infrastructure of material and technical support is being formed. At the same time, great importance is given to environmental safety, waste utilization and cleanup of the Arctic, "General of the Army Sergei Shoigu specified.

The Minister of Defense stressed that special attention was paid to strengthening the control system for the air situation in the Arctic. "To this end, in December 2015, the 45th Army of the Air Force and Air Defense of the Northern Fleet was formed. The military units of the radio-technical troops and the anti-aircraft missile regiment equipped with the upgraded S-300 Favorit complexes on the Franz Josef Land archipelagos, Novaya Zemlya, Severnaya Zemlya, and the Novosibirsk Islands have joined the air defense defense unit, the head of the military department said.

In addition, General of the Army Sergei Shoigu noted, the grouping of troops deployed on an ongoing basis is being built up in the Arctic. "As a result, the Armed Forces will be able to adequately respond to existing and projected threats, as well as ensure the protection of national interests in the region," the Defense Minister said.

In December 2014 plans to establish a separate Army Air Force and Air Defense in the Northern Fleet ( "North" unified strategic command) reported Chief of General Staff Valery Gerasimov. According to a high-ranking source in the military department, the 1st Air and Space Defense Brigade (North Sea) from the 1st Air Force and Air Defense Command (the 6th Leningrad Army of the Air Force and Air Defense) was to be transferred to the army, as well as separate parts and the junction of the 2nd and 3rd Air Force and Air Defense Commands from the Central and Eastern Military Districts.

The air defense system of the Russian Arctic is being improved, and another air defense division has been formed in the region, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said on 28 February 2020. "The air defense system of the Russian segment of the Arctic and the northern borders of the country is being improved. Another Air Defense Division has been formed in the Northern Fleet," Shoigu said at a meeting of the board of the military department. The Northern Sea Route is under reliable protection, the minister said. "Every year, the forces and troops of the Northern Fleet work out interspecific interaction with units and units of the Airborne Forces, Airborne Forces and Special Operations Forces while defending important industrial facilities and protecting Russia's economic interests in the Arctic zone," said Shoigu. According to him, the Ministry of Defense pays paramount attention to strengthening the country's defense capabilities in the Arctic region.
