Louis Trichardt Airbase

Air Force Base Louis Trichardt cover a area of 4 200 hectares and is situated 40 kilometres form Louis Trichardt. Detailed designing of the runway system began in 1982 and the construction thereof was done by 400 Aerodrome Maintenance Unit. In 1984 design and construction of the infrastructure began. On 14 October 1987 AFB Louis Trichardt was officially opened by the former Minister of Defence, General M.A. Malan, SSA, OFE, SD, SM. Only Airf Force Base Hoedspruit is comparable to AFB Louis Trichardt with regadr to concept and construction. AFB Louis Trichardt can therefor justifiably be regarded as one of the most modern bases in the South African Air Force and indeed in the world.

2 Squadron, equipped with Cheetah C and DIE fighter aircraft was reactivated at AFB Louis Trichardt on 23 February 1993 during a parade and prestige function. 19 Squadron, equipped with Alouette III and Oryx helicopters was officially opened at AFB Louis Trichardt in January 1992. 102 Squadron is also stationed at AFB Louis Trichardt. 515 Squadron was trasferred from AFB Ondangwa to AFB Louis Trichardt.
